Police have arrested one suspect in connection with a mass shooting at Morgan State University, while a second remains at large.

The traumatic shooting took place at a homecoming celebration on October 3 at the historically black college in Baltimore, Maryland.

According to police, multiple gunmen opened fire into a near-capacity crowd leaving the Mister and Miss Morgan State pageant that evening.

Five people were injured in the shooting, four of whom were students at the Morgan State. The rest of the homecoming festivities at the college were cancelled.

Morgan State President David Wilson called the shooting a ‘heinous and very deliberate act of violence.’

The suspect arrested on Friday was only identified as a 17-year-old juvenile. Morgan State said he is not affiliated with the university in any way.

He was taken into custody without incident and is facing multiple counts of attempted murder.

‘While this arrest cannot undo the damage and trauma caused that day, it is my hope that it can bring some peace and justice to the victims, the Morgan community and our city,’ said Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley.

Another shooting suspect, 18-year-old Javon Williams, remains at large. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Williams is also under federal indictment for his involvement with the Kennedy Street Crew, a gang based in northwest Washington DC. He has an open warrant out for his arrest for gun and drug charges.

‘The Morgan Community can take solace today in knowing that an arrest has been made and we are one step closer to bringing all of the alleged culprits responsible for the incident that occurred on our campus to justice,’ President Wilson said on Friday.

He continued: ‘We look forward to the day when all the individuals involved in the shooting are made to be held accountable for what took place.’

Man pleads guilty to stealing Judy Garland's red slippers from Wizard of Oz

A man in Minnesota has pleaded guilty to stealing the red slippers worn by Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz.

Terry Jon Martin, 76, changed his plea to guilty for theft of a major artwork after the famous ruby sequined shoes were brazenly stolen from a museum in 2005.

The slippers were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum, which is located in the actor’s childhood home in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

The iconic slippers were one of four pairs worn by the actor during the filming of The Wizard of Oz, and were insured for $1million. Their current market value is closer to $3.5million, according to investigators.

Investigators finally got a break in the case in 2017 after a person contacted the museum’s insurer claiming to know how to get the shoes returned.

The insurer went to the FBI ‘when it became apparent that those involved were in reality attempting to extort the owners of the slippers,’ FBI Special Agent Christopher Dudley said.

The slippers were finally recovered by the FBI in 2018, over 13 years after the original heist. However, no arrests were made and a mystery still surrounded the theft of the cherished piece of American film history.

‘Our top priority was the safe recovery of the slippers,’ Special Agent Dudley said at the time.

In May 2023, five years after the slippers were recovered, a Minnesota grand jury indicted Martin – a 76-year-old man who lives just 12 miles south of the Judy Garland Museum.

Martin initially entered a not guilty plea when he was arraigned in May. His attorney, Dane DeKrey, said he is in poor health and looking to come clean.

‘I think Terry is facing his own mortality, and I think when people are reaching that point in their life, they cut through the pleasantries and talk turkey,’ DeKrey said.

Martin was seen being taken into court on Friday in a wheelchair and clutching an oxygen tank.

Martin confessed to snatching the slippers while visiting the museum, thinking they contained real rubies. He eventually brought them to a jewelry fence after he realized the red gems were just glass.

He was not taken into custody after the hearing.

A jury convicted one of two police officers on trial for the negligent homicide of Elijah McClain, a black man who was held in a chokehold and given an overdose of a sedative.

Randy Roedema, a former police officer in Aurora, Colorado, was found guilty of negligent homicide and assault for the death of an unarmed black man in his custody.

A second indicted officer, Jason Rosenblatt, was simultaneously found not guilty for the same incident.

McClain, 23, was stopped by police while walking home from a convenience store in August 2019. The officers were responding to a call about a ‘sketchy’ person wearing a ski mask.

Although McClain was not suspected of committing a crime, Roedema and Rosenblatt pinned him to the ground, where he allegedly started vomiting.

The officers called in paramedics, who gave McClain a 500mg dosage of ketamine before attempting to transport him to the hospital.

McClain went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance, and was declared brain dead three days after the arrest.

Local prosecutors did not press charges immediately after McClain’s death, but Colorado Governor Jared Polis ordered his state’s attorney general to take a second look at the case after the death of George Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser eventually indicted three police officers and two paramedics for McClain’s death. Roedema and Rosenblatt are the first to go to trial.

A trial for the third officer, Nathan Woodyard, is scheduled to begin on Friday.

At trial, jurors were shown body-worn camera footage from Roedema, where they analyzed the conduct of the

In the video, McClain could be heard telling the officers he couldn’t breathe at least six times. He could also be heard shouting ‘I’m an introvert and I’m different.’

Defense attorneys for the officers argued that McClain’s death was caused by the ketamine dosage. However, prosecutors successfully argued that Roedema’s restraint also contributed to his death.

They also claimed that Roedema did not inform the paramedics that McClain was having trouble breathing – a factor that would make influenced their decision to administer the sedative.

The defense also argued McClain reached for Roedema’s gun – a claim that prosecutors disputed.

Roedema was found guilty after a jury deliberated for about 16 hours. He face up to three years in prison.

McClain’s mother, Sheneen McClain, attended the trial and expressed disappointment in the verdict.

‘I’m disappointed because despite all the evidence in front of their face, they still played the race card,’ McClain told 9News in Colorado. ‘Right is right, and wrong is wrong. And when you continue to allow the type of injustice that happened to my son, there is so much to work on.’

‘This is the divided states of America, and that’s what happens,’ the grieving mother told reporters outside the courthouse. ‘That’s it. I’m out. I’m pissed.’

For Wells, his wife Lacey, and their two young sons, life after the accident has been difficult – but Wells says his family have been everything to him during his recovery.

Since the accident, Wells has made massive progress in his adjustments – he has been learning how to grab objects, go on shopping trips, and has even been able to hold his children’s hands again.

‘My wife was nine months pregnant at the time, and she was at the baby doctor that day,’ said Wells.

‘I was working around the machine, and the next thing I knew, I felt it grab my left hand and start pulling me in.

‘Out of instinct, I immediately reached in with my right hand to try to pull it out.

‘That’s when it caught both hands and started pulling me in and crushing my hands at the same time – I just started screaming.

‘I had fingers missing – some fingers were just bones. The skin on my left hand to my elbow was ripped off and hanging down to my belt loops.

‘I could see all the muscle around my forearms in my left arm. My right hand was flatter than a pancake, with fingers missing.

‘A week after the accident, my wife had the baby, and I wasn’t there to see it – we did a FaceTime call over an iPad.

‘I did really miss home – I missed my kids and my wife.

‘I was wrapped up in bandages, so I didn’t know what the extent of my injury was so but for the most part at the hospital, I was pretty positive just because I was excited to be alive.

‘I couldn’t have known that I wouldn’t be able to hold my kids’ hands anymore or throw a ball around with them or anything like that.’

Wells’ accident happened in August of 2020, and decided to fully amputate his hands at his doctor’s recommendation in January 2021.

Initially heartbroken about the thought of never holding his children again, Wells became determined to master the use of his prosthetic arms in order to make sure he can still play with his sons.

Since learning how to use prosthetics, Wells has been able to relearn how to grab and hold objects again – and most importantly, how to hold hands with his children again.

‘The main thing I’m able to do with my prosthetics is hold my kids’ hands again,’ he said.

‘Although I can’t technically feel my prosthetic holding their hand, I feel it in my heart.

‘At first, when I got my prosthetics, I was extremely excited – I didn’t realise the work that was ahead of me to get proficient with them.

‘With my hands, I didn’t have to think twice how to grab something, or how tight to hold it – but with prosthetics, you don’t know.

‘When you go from one day having hands and fingers to not having anything the next day, it shakes your world.

You start to really realise just how precious a gift your hands really are. I’m still learning how to adapt without hands.’

Now, three years on from the accident, Wells is still dealing with the long-lasting mental effects of his ordeal.

After developing post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of the accident, Wells sought therapy, and has since come a long way in his mental health journey.

Wells now sees a therapist regularly and shares his story online with hopes of letting other people with similar experiences know that they’re not alone.

With the love and support of his wife and two sons, Wells is continuing to learn to adapt to his prosthetics and work on his mental health – and one day hopes to go back to work and provide for his family.

‘I sat there in my house for the first couple of months and felt really alone,’ he said.

‘There’s still points to this day where I feel alone, even though I’m not.

‘I want to get my story out there because I want people who are going through anxiety, PTSD or amputation to know that they’re not alone.

‘I’m looking forward to one day being able to return to work and provide for my family.

‘I’m looking forward to watching my kids grow up and experiencing new things and opportunities with them.

‘I hope that my kids learn to love themselves no matter what. I hope they learn patience, and that no matter how bad of a situation they’re in, they have what it takes to make it out.

‘Lastly, I hope they only judge people by their character and not by their differences.’

Students at a Florida charter school were shown an unrated Winnie the Pooh horror film.

Fourth grade students – aged nine and ten – in a math class at the Academy for Innovative Education in Miami were terrified after they were shown part of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, a bloody slasher flick released earlier this year after the iconic children’s character entered the public domain.

The controversial screening was first reported by CBS News Miami, who spoke to several parents of the traumatized elementary schoolers.

‘He didn’t stop the movie, even though there were kids saying, “Hey, stop the movie, we don’t want to want this,” one mother, Michelle Diaz said.

According to Diaz, the students in the class selected the movie, but the ‘careless’ teacher did not stop the screening after other students complained.

The Academy for Innovative Education said that they were ‘aware’ of the incident, and said that the segment shown was ‘not suitable for the age group.’

‘Our administration promptly addressed this issue directly with the teacher and has taken appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of students,’ said the Head of Schools Vera Hirsh in a statement.

‘We are actively monitoring the students and our mental health counselor and principal have already met with those students who have expressed concerns,’ Hirsh said.

The bloody horror film was released in April 2023, just over a year after Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain in the United States.

The movie’s director, Rhys Frake-Waterfield, told Metro.co.uk that his new reimagining of the classic children’s book character was ‘far from the original story and not tame.’

He described his version of Pooh and Piglet as ‘unhinged, feral beings who are really sadistic and twisted.’

‘They just want to go around and cause loads of suffering.’

Work has now started on a sequel, featuring a nightmarish version of the character Tigger.

Woman who faked her own kidnapping facing one year in prison for hoax

The woman who faked her own kidnapping in Alabama was found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison.

Carlee Russell, 26, was charged with falsely filing police reports for the hoax that caught national attention earlier this year.

A judge found Russell guilty at a municipal court trial on Wednesday, ordering her to pay $18,000 in restitution and spend one year in prison.

Russell drew national attention on July 13 after she disappeared off the side of a highway in Alabama.

Russell was on the phone with 911 moments before, reporting that she saw a child wearing a diaper running on the side of the road.

Russell returned to her parents’ home 48 hours later and claimed she was kidnapped by a man and a woman who used the child as bait.

She claimed the couple took naked photos of her, and held her blindfolded in the back of an semi-truck.

Investigators were unable to verify most of Russell’s story, and on July 24 she released a statement acknowledging it was a fabrication.

She was quickly charged with two counts of falsely reporting an incident, a misdemeanor charge.

‘Her decisions that night created panic and alarm for citizens of our city and even across the nation as concern grew that a kidnapper was on the lose using a small child as bait,’ said Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis.

‘We don’t see this as a victimless crime,’ said Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. ‘There were significant hours spent, resources expended, as a result of this investigation.’

Municipal Judge Brad Bishop ended up giving Russell the maximum penalty of one year in prison, a move that has prompted her attorneys to immediately appeal the decision.

‘They’re trying to add some jail time, which we totally disagree with,’ her attorney Emory Anthony told reporters.

Anthony said that first-time offenders like Russell who are convicted of a Class A misdemeanor are generally not put in jail.

‘I think she understands what has happened,’ Russell said. ‘She has apologized for what transpired.’

Woman arrested after three people stabbed at Atlanta airport https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/12/woman-arrested-after-three-people-stabbed-at-atlanta-airport-19653411/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/12/woman-arrested-after-three-people-stabbed-at-atlanta-airport-19653411/#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2023 15:13:19 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19653411

A woman was arrested after stabbing three people, including a police officer, at an airport in Atlanta.

Officers from the Atlanta Police Department (APD) responded to the incident at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport around 4.45pm on Wednesday.

According to a preliminary investigation, the first victim was a taxi driver who was taking the attacker to the airport.

‘The female stabbed the driver of a taxi she was in, as it was pulling up to the airport,’ APD said in a press release. ‘She then exited the taxi and walked into the airport where officers encountered her a short time later.’

The suspect was later identified as Damaris Milton

One witness who saw the woman inside the terminal told 11 Alive she was waving a large knife around.

‘It was a good sized knife, it wasn’t like a small pocket knife,’ she said.

APD officers confronted the woman inside the terminal.

‘They encountered her outside the security checkpoint in what they call the west crossover,’ APD Sgt John Chafee said. ‘Prior to their encounter, she had stabbed another adult male.’

According to Chafee, the officers ‘began to try to talk her into dropping the knife and limit her movement.’

‘She walked into the south terminal, and there she stabbed another female, and then she stabbed an APD lieutenant who was trying to take her into custody,’ Chafee said.

She was quickly tackled by another APD officer after the stabbing, and taken into custody unharmed and without further incident.

The suspect was later identified as 44-year-old Damaris Milton. She is awaiting charges and will be taken to Clayton County Jail.

All three victims were taken to the hospital in stable condition. All three were described as ‘alert, conscious and breathing.’

Hartsfield-Jackson Airport said there was ‘minimal interruption’ to flights. The airport confirmed the incident was cleared around 7.20pm the same evening.

Two climbers who were competing for a world record title have died at the last hurdle.

Gina Marie Rzucidlo and Anna Gutu, both Americans, were climbing the 26,335ft Mount Shishapangma in Tibet when they lost their lives.

They were competing to become the first American woman to climb all 14 of the world’s highest peaks – and this was the final summit for both of their challenges.

They died in separate locations after the mountain was hit by a series of avalanches over the weekend, the Telegraph reports.

Ms Gutu died alongside her Nepalese guide, Mingmar Sherpa, while Ms Rzucidlo and her guide Tenjen Sherpa were declared missing on the same day.

There was hope that 45-year-old Ms Rzucidlo and her guide might have survived the avalanche, but it’s now been confirmed that they also lost their lives.

Uta Ibrahimi, a mountaineer from Kosovo, turned back after the first avalanche hit but says she saw Ms Rzucidlo and her guide continue their climb.

More than 50 mountaineers were trying to reach the summit of Mount Shishapangma, which is the 14th highest mountain in the world and the only mountain above 8,000 metres which is entirely within Tibet.

Ms Rzucidlo’s sister Christy Lavallee said: ‘The Chinese authorities have declared my sister Gina and her Sherpa Tenjen Lama as deceased.

‘Requests for search by helicopter from Nepal have been declined by the Chinese government.

‘We have been told the search for their bodies may resume in the spring once weather conditions are favourable.

‘We’re all devastated. We fluctuate between feeling numb and just crying.

‘This is something she had been working on for a few years now. It’s heartbreaking because she was so, so close.’

Tenjen Sherpa, Ms Rzucidlo’s climbing companion, recently set a record along with Norwegian climber Kristin Harila for climbing the world’s 14 tallest peaks in the fastest time.

They completed the challenge in 92 days, with their final ascent being K2 in Pakistan in July. They had climbed Mount Shishapangma in April.

Jermaine Jones, 3, was found dead in a river after he wandered away from home while babysitter had a shower

A young, autistic boy who wandered away from home while his babysitter was in the shower has been found dead in a river.

Jermaine Jones, 3, walked away from his home in Watertown Township, Michigan, around 2pm on Monday, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.

Amber Anderson said: ‘My sweet cousin Tori tragically lost her 2 year old son, Jermaine, when he wandered away from their home.’

She set up a GoFundMe page for his funeral expenses and relief to the family.

‘Jermaine was full of life and had so much more of it left to live.’

Cops scoured the area for Jermaine all Tuesday and overnight using tracking dogs, drones, boats, thermal imaging and civilian search crews. He was autistic and nonverbal, and last seen wearing a dinosaur T-shirt, shoes with a shark print and no shoes.

‘The 3 year old boy pictured walked away from his residence and has not been seen since,’ wrote the sheriff’s office in a Facebook post.

‘We are seeking assistance from the public in locating him. If you live in the area, please check your home, outbuildings, cameras, etc. We are continuing the search with specialized resources this evening with the hope of locating him.

‘If we are unsuccessful this evening, we will bring in more volunteers in the morning.’

Jermaine was found dead in the Looking Glass River around 4pm on Tuesday, the Clinton County undersheriff told WILX.

‘It is with great sadness that we are reporting that the missing child was located deceased,’ the sheriff’s office wrote in another Facebook post. ‘Please pray for the family during this tragic time.’

No foul play was suspected throughout the search efforts.

Sheriff’s officials would not comment on Jermaine or the babysitter in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon. An official said an Amber alert was not issued because they did not believe Jermaine was kidnapped.

Jermaine’s parents were believed to be at work when he walked away from the home.

The GoFundMe fundraiser, which will go toward funeral costs, food and bills facing Jermaine’s family, had raised more than $11,600 as of Wednesday afternoon.

Texas executed a man who killed an 80-year-old woman during carjacking 23 years ago.

Jedidiah Murphy, 48, was given a lethal injection at the Texas State Penitentiary’s Huntsville Unit on Tuesday night.

He was convicted in 2001 for the murder of Bertie Lee Cunningham, an 80-year-old grandmother while attempting to steal her car in the Dallas suburb of Garland.

On October 4, 2000, Murphy approached Cunningham at the Collin Creek Mall and forced her to give him a ride at gunpoint, prosecutors said.

About 30 minutes later, he shot her in the back of the head and placed her in her car’s trunk.

He later dumped Cunningham’s body in a river before stealing her credit card to buy cigarettes and alcohol.

Murphy eventually confessed to killing, but claimed he could only remember parts of the event due to heavy cocaine use at the time.

Prosecutors also alleged Murphy was responsible for two robberies and a kidnapping that occurred around the same time.

Although Murphy admitted to killing Cunningham, but maintained his innocence on the other charges.

Prosecutors used the robbery and kidnapping charges to argue that Murphy was a danger to society. A jury sentenced him to death in 2001.

Murphy long sought to delay the execution, claiming that prosecutors never analyzed DNA evidence that would prove his innocence.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with Murphy on Monday, delaying his execution until the DNA could be analyzed.

However, the Supreme Court reversed the lower court’s decision, paving the way for Murphy’s execution on Tuesday.

On Tuesday night, Murphy was brought to an execution chamber at the Huntsville Unit, which houses Texas’s death row.

‘To the family of the victim, I sincerely apologize for all of it,’ Murphy said. ‘I hope this helps, if possible, give you closure,’

Murphy then began to recite Psalm 34, a lengthy 23-line passage from the Bible.

‘God bless all of y’all,’ he said in his last statement. ‘It’s OK. Tell my babies I love them.’

He then shouted ‘Bella is my wife!’ before the drugs began to take effect.

Murphy was pronounced dead around 10.15pm, about 25 minutes after the lethal injection was administered.

Traffic into Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) was shut down on Wednesday as police investigated vehicular bomb threat, according to a report.

Roadways in and out of the international airport in Maryland were closed for an intense police investigation around 3.00pm.

‘Vehicular traffic approaching the airport is currently being held,’ BWI said. ‘Those in the terminal are advised to remain in place at this time.’

Sources told CNN that a person had threatened to detonate a bomb inside a parked car near the airport’s curb.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to the Maryland Transportation Authority Police for further comment on the incident.

Around 4.20pm, the airport said law enforcement ‘cleared’ the vehicle in question, and said the roads would slowly be reopened.

An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

A well-known cave diver was discovered dead in the deepest underwater cave in the US – the same place where he set a record a decade ago.

Brett Hemphill, 56, dove into Phantom Springs Cave in Toyahvale, Texas, on October 4. He tied a guide rope at roughly 570 feet deep, at which point he got separated from his team.

Other divers and rescue crews searched for him down to more than 450 feet deep.

Four days later, on Sunday, they recovered his body.

‘We finished recovering Brett from the cave this evening,’ wrote fellow cave explorer Andy Pitkin on the Facebook page of Karst Underwater Research, a nonprofit protecting underwater ecosystems that Hemphill served as president of.

‘Thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way. When we have got all the information and analyzed it, we will issue a statement about the incident that will answer everyone’s questions.

‘Until then, please allow us some time to come to terms with his loss, as up until now we have been focused on the recovery.’

Over two decades, Hemphill traversed various cave systems and mapped them out.

Hemphill and members of Karst Underwater Research broke a deep underwater cave record in the US in 2008, getting down 407 feet in Weeki Wachee Springs in Florida.

In 2013, Hemphill set a new record in the US when he dove 465 feet down Phantom Springs and 8,000 back in the cave system. He discovered the deepest underwater cave ever to be measured in the country.

Hemphill won Emmy Awards working with photographer Becky Kagan Schott.

‘We won Emmys together, educated the public about safety in caves and what draws people to these places,’ wrote Schott.

‘I will always smile when I think of you but right now I’m heartbroken as are all of your friends. You meant a lot to a lot of people.’

New York Rep George Santos was indicted on more charges on Tuesday, including stealing the identities and credit cards of his campaign donors.

Santos, a Republican lawmaker representing parts of Long Island and Queens, was previously charged with defrauding political donors, misuse of COVID-19 relief funds, and lying to Congress.

Santos pleaded not guilty to the charges in June, and has insisted he is the victim of a ‘witch hunt.’

The new 23-count indictment filed on Tuesday supersedes the one filed in May, charging Santos with a much larger fraud scheme, including making payments on his donors’ credit cards.

‘Santos is charged with stealing people’s identities and making charges on his own donors’ credit cards without their authorization, lying to the FEC and, by extension, the public about the financial state of his campaign,’ US Attorney Breon Peace said.

He also allegedly ‘falsely inflated the campaign’s reported receipts with non-existent loans and contributions that were either fabricated or stolen.’

According to the indictment, Santos collected credit card information from his campaign donors in order to process donations.

Santos allegedly used the credit cards to then transfer money to his campaign, to other campaigns, to his own personal bank account.

‘To conceal the true source of these funds and to circumvent campaign contribution limits, Santos falsely represented that some of the campaign contributions were made by other persons, such as his relatives or associates, rather than the true cardholders,’ the Justice Department said.

FILE - U.S. Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., holds a miniature American flag that was presented to him as he departs federal court, June 30, 2023, in Central Islip, N.Y. Prosecutors say the ex-campaign treasurer for Santos is scheduled to enter a guilty plea to an unspecified felony in connection with the federal investigation of financial irregularities surrounding the indicted New York Republican. In one case, a campaign donor provided him the information for two credit cards to make donations in 2021.

Santos then used those cards to pay out his campaign and a political action committee a total of $44,800 without their authorization.

In order to circumvent campaign contribution limits, Santos reported the donations came from himself and ‘one of his relatives.’

On another occasion, Santos used a donor’s credit card to send $12,000 to his own bank account.

The new indictment also accuses Santos of orchestrating a scheme with his former campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, to mislead the Federal Election Commission (FEC) about his finances.

In order to determine if a campaign is financially viable, the FEC requires candidates to show that they raised at least $250,000 from third-party donors in one quarter.

The national Republican Party also uses the FEC’s fundraising data in order to qualify candidates to receive party funds.

In order to make it appear that Santos’s campaign had enough donors, he and Marks reported donations from at least 10 of their family members without their knowledge.

Santos also reported he had loaned his own campaign $500,000. However, at the time he only had $8,000 in his bank account.

Marks pleaded guilty to charges related to the scheme on October 5.

In the past, Santos has denied the allegations against him and resisted calls to resign, including some from his own party.

The embattled congressman told CNN ‘nothing has changed’ after the second indictment.

‘I think I’ve made it clear that I will fight this to prove my innocence,’ he said. ‘So yeah, I’m pretty much denying every last bit of charges.’

Santos also said he would not take a plea deal if one was offered by prosecutors.

He again resisted calls to step down, and said he would continue to run for reelection in 2024.

Meanwhile, congressional Republicans said they were drafting a motion to expel Santos from congress

‘He has no business being in the halls of the House of Representatives,’ said Rep Nick LaLota, a Republican who represents eastern Long Island. ‘He’s an immoral person, he’s an untrustworthy person, he’s scammed hundreds of thousands of voters.’

A motion to expel a member of congress requires a two-thirds (290 out of 435) vote in the House of Representatives.

Democrats control 212 seats in congress, meaning 78 Republicans would need to vote to expel a member of their own party.

Santos’s expulsion would also cut down the Republicans’ razor-thin majority to just 8 votes.

Dozens of Republicans have asked Santos to step down.

Police in Florida handcuff disabled student, 9, during tantrum at school https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/11/police-in-florida-handcuff-disabled-boy-9-during-tantrum-at-school-19644496/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/11/police-in-florida-handcuff-disabled-boy-9-during-tantrum-at-school-19644496/#respond Wed, 11 Oct 2023 14:08:20 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19644496

The parents of a child with additional needs who was handcuffed during a violent tantrum at a Florida school are suing the city and local police.

Body cam footage captured the nine-year-old boy kicking his feet and throwing letters around the room, before officers ask him to stand in order to handcuff him.

He then begins wailing and swearing – before a woman is heard saying: ‘If you relax, we can take the cuffs off.’

A complaint filed last month says an Individual Education Plan and a Behavior Intervention Plan for the student mention he has a problem with ‘physical aggression’, and the school had a specific procedure in place to deal with him.

Now, the boy’s parents are reportedly seeking at least $75,000 (£61,047) in damages as they say excessive force was used on their son.

The body cam video of the incident, which took place on February 2 at Stenstrom Elementary School in Oviedo, near Orlando, shows school staff initially using pads to deflect his kicks and punches.

Yashira Moncada, a school resource officer (SRO) – a police officer who specialises in responding to incidents at schools – is called in to help deal with the situation.

In the video, which was taken on her camera, she is heard saying: ‘This is why I can’t be an SRO.’

Later, she asks the fourth-grader ‘if he wants to go to jail’ before calling in her colleague Scott Moseley, who puts the student’s arms behind his back and handcuffs him.

As the child swears at him, Moseley repeatedly tells him to ‘chill’ and to ‘stop trying to stand up’.

In his report of the incident, Moseley wrote: ‘I secured [him/her] using handcuffs which closed all the way down past the point where any cuff teeth were left.

‘The cuffs dangled loosely around [his/her] wrists but did not allow [his/her] hands out.

‘I did not let go of for fear [he/she] would harm [him/herself].’

The restraints were removed after around 13 minutes.

According to the complaint, Moncada allegedly told the parents they were ‘lucky that she did not arrest’ their son at a later meeting which was also attended by school staff.

The suit cites an agreement from the local school board that SROs should not use handcuffs on disabled students until the end of fifth grade, as well as a general order from the police department restricting the use of handcuffs on under-12s.

It argues he ‘has suffered physical and emotional abuse and injury, mental anguish, violation of (his) right, humiliation, discomfort, embarrassment, loss of dignity, aggravation of an existing disease or mental defect, and medical expenses.’

In a statement reported by the Daily Mail, the family’s lawyer Drew Moss said: ‘Nine-year-old children should not be handcuffed by police officers at school.

‘The City of Oviedo has failed to reach out to the family to make any effort to address this unfortunate situation.’

The Miami Herald reported that the City of Oviedo declined to comment due to the pending litigation, while a response from the Oviedo Police Department was not received.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have raised eyebrows after a seven-car convoy was called in to drive them around a single block.

Harry and Meghan were in New York on Tuesday to speak at the World Mental Health Day Festival.

The couple left a garage near the Equinox Hotel in Hudson Yards in a blacked-out SUV, and their convoy was flanked by NYPD patrol cars, totalling seven vehicles.

They were driven around the block, as per the one way street outside the garage, to then pull into a different garage on 33rd street – 200ft away from the first.

The 0.6 mile drive, due to the one way street forcing the convoy around the block, was several times further than the distance they would have travelled on foot.

Prince Harry has previously called climate change one of the ‘most pressing issues’ facing mankind, telling Oprah Winfrey during the couple’s explosive 2021 interview that he wanted to face the issue head-on.

In 2022 he spoke at the United Nations about seeking insight from the late Nelson Mandela and urged countries to take action on climate change, saying ‘our world is on fire’.

The couple announced in 2021 that they will work to reach net zero carbon emissions by the end of the decade – but they’ve previously drawn criticism for flying between the UK and US in private jets.

Harry and Meghan then hosted a panel discussion at the festival, marking their first-ever in-person event for their charity, the Archewell Foundation, MailOnline reports.

It’s the first time they’ve appeared in New York together since they were caught up in a ‘near catastrophic car chase’ in May, following their attendance at the Women of Vision awards.

A spokesman for the couple at the time said the couple, as well as Meghan’s mom Doria Ragland, were the victims of a ‘relentless pursuit lasting more than two hours’ at the hands of ‘highly aggressive paparazzi’.

It has been suggested that they were trying not to be followed to where they were staying on the Upper East Side of the city.

However, New York police subsequently told NBC that they did not believe the chase was ‘near catastrophic’, instead describing it as a ‘bit of a chaotic scene’.

A man who beat his girlfriend’s two-year-old daughter to death and refused to call for medical help until it was too late will spend the rest of his life in jail.

Convicted killer Andrew Byrd, 37, has been given two consecutive life sentences for the brutal slaying of Harper Mitchell.

‘No person, let alone a little girl, a little angel, should be hurt,’ said Circuit Judge Joey Showalter during his sentencing hearing on Friday.

Byrd was in his home in Roanoke, Virginia, on April 16, 2020, with Harper and her two siblings while their mother, Amanda Mitchell, was away at work.

The mother returned to find Harper bruised, cold and limp. Still, Byrd would not let her call for medical help and instead confiscated the phone, The Roanoke Times reported. She said her boyfriend strangled her and threatened to kill her kids if she took Harper to a hospital.

‘This is the most serious crime of all the crimes we’ve got on our books,’ said Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Rehak, according to the newspaper. ‘This defendant tortured that poor little girl.’

The next morning, Mitchell said she got to her phone and called Byrd’s mother, who in turn called cops. Her toddler was taken to a hospital, where she was taken off life support three days afterward.

Harper died of blunt-force trauma to her head.

She was so beaten that it looked like she was in bad car crash, testified medical examiner Amy Tharp.

A jury in March convicted Byrd of eight counts including aggravated murder, child neglect, abduction, assault and battery, aggravated malicious wounding, interfering with an emergency call and possessing a methamphetamine. They did not find him guilty of brandishing a firearm.

‘This is a dangerous, violent liar,’ Rehak said on Friday, adding that a life sentence is ‘probably too kind, and too much mercy’.

Harper’s dad, TJ Mitchell, detailed to the judge how hard it was to take his daughter off life support.

Her mother faces pending charges for child abuse, cruelty and drug possession.

A 104-year-old woman died peacefully in her sleep – days after breaking the world record for oldest person to skydive.

Dorothy Hoffner hopped from a plane at Skydive Chicago Airport on October 1 and broke the Guinness World Record for oldest tandem parachute jump set by a 103-year-old Swedish woman last year.

‘There was nothing scary about it,’ Hoffner told the Chicago Sun-Times after landing in Ottawa, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago.

‘It was nice, peaceful.’

On Monday morning, Hoffner was found dead at the Brookdale Lake View senior living community by staff, her friend Joe Conant said. She is believed to have died on Sunday night.

A spokesperson for the Skydive Chicago & US Parachute Association told the newspaper they were honored that Hoffner’s last dive wrapped up her ‘exciting, well-lived life’.

‘Skydiving is an activity that many of us safely tuck away in our bucket lists,’ stated the spokesperson. ‘But Dorothy reminds us that it’s never too late to take the thrill of a lifetime.’

Hoffner did not see her age stopping her from breaking the world record – which she did not make a big deal of.

‘What has age got to do with what you’re doing?’ the Chicago native told the Sun-Times afterward the 13,400-foot tandem jump. ‘I’m 104 years old, so what?’

Hoffner was ‘indefatigable’, said Conant, who met her while caring for another resident at the same senior living center.

‘She just kept going,’ Conant said. ‘She was not someone who would take naps in the afternoon, or not show up for any function, dinner or anything else. She was always there, fully present. She kept going, always.’

Conant is going through paperwork to ensure that Hoffner is recognized as the world’s oldest skydiver by Guinness World Records.

He said: ‘She had no intention of breaking the record. And she had no interest in any publicity or anything. She wasn’t doing it for any other reason than she wanted to go skydiving.’

Pumpkin sets world record at 2,749 pounds and can yield 600 pies https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/10/pumpkin-sets-world-record-contest-california-19642876/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/10/pumpkin-sets-world-record-contest-california-19642876/#respond Tue, 10 Oct 2023 21:36:24 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19642876

It’s go big or gourd home for one pumpkin grower.

Travis Gienger not only won the 50th annual World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-off in Half Moon Bay and $30,000. He set a new world record with his pumpkin weighing 2,749 pounds (1,226 kilograms) – so big it is able to yield at least 687 pies.

‘I was not expecting that,’ said Gienger, 43, on Monday. ‘It was quite the feeling.’

The record was last set by Italian grower Stefano Cutrupi with a 2,702-pound pumpkin in 2021, according to Guinness World Records.

Gienger of Anoka, Minnesota, won the contest last year with a 2,560-pound gourd and in 2020 with one weighing 2,350.

The landscape and horticulture teacher spent about $15,000 feeding and tending this year’s winner, SFGate reported. He named it Michael Jordan after the legendary basketball player.

‘This pumpkin is called Michael Jordan because it’s the year ’23,’ Gienger told KSTP, referring to Jordan’s jersey number. ‘And he’s the greatest basketball player of all time.

He added that it ‘started out basketball round, and I said this is going to be a perfectly round basketball-shaped pumpkin’.

In an Instagram post a few days before the contest, Gienger shared photos of himself and friends loading Michael Jordan from his backyard where he grew it onto a vehicle he drove to California.

‘Locked and loaded, pumpkin had a suprisingly flat bottom!’ he wrote.

Gienger had not posted about his big win on Instagram as of Tuesday afternoon, but was tagged in another post holding up a $30,000 check as other pumpkin growers hoisted him in the air.

He said he plans to put the funds toward growing an even bigger gourd for next year’s contest.

‘I put in the work so that I can put a smile on people’s faces,’ Gienger told SFGate. ‘And it’s just so nice coming out here to see everyone in this town.’

Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research and ex-girlfriend of Sam Bankman-Fried, took the stand to testify against the disgraced cryptocurrency mogul on Tuesday.

Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of bankrupt crypto exchange FTX, is currently at trial facing charges of fraud, money laundering, and campaign finance violations.

Ellison, who pleaded guilty to similar charges in December 2022, told the court that Bankman-Fried ‘directed me to commit these crimes.’

Ellison was the former CEO of Alameda Research, a trading firm founded by Bankman-Fried that served as a liquidity provider for FTX.

She also dated Bankman-Fried, who was jailed before his trial after he leaked her private diaries to the New York Times.

Ellison and Bankman-Fried met in 2016 when both worked for the trading firm Jane Street Capital.

Bankman-Fried left Jane Street in 2017 to eventually start FTX and Alameda Research. He recruited Ellison for Alameda in early 2018.

Both companies collapsed in November 2022 after FTX lost over $1billion in customer funds. Bankman-Fried was indicted by federal prosecutors a month later.

After the indictment against Bankman-Fried was unsealed, prosecutors revealed that Ellison and FTX co-founder Gary Wang agreed to testify against him.

Ellison agreed to plead guilty to charges of wire fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit fraud as part of her deal with prosecutors.

Bankman-Fried’s trail began on October 2, months after he was extradited from his $30million home in the Bahamas.

Ellison was seen entering the Federal Courthouse in Manhattan on Tuesday, wearing dark sunglasses and a blue baseball cap low on her head.

On the witness stand, it took Ellison nearly a minute for her to recognize her ex-boyfriend, now wearing a suit instead of his typical gym shorts.

Ellison stated that Bankman-Fried directed her to take over $10billion in customer funds from FTX in order to pay Alameda Research’s debts.

‘Alameda took several billion dollars of money from FTX customers and used it for our own investments and to repay debts that we had,’ Ellison told the court.

She said that in the years prior to the collapse, Bankman-Fried had ‘set up a system that allowed Alameda to borrow from FTX.’

She also said that FTX provided Alameda Research a $65billion credit line. No other accounts at the exchange were offered more than $1billion in credit.

When Ellison asked if the FTX line of credit would cause them legal issues, Bankman-Fried allegedly told her, ‘don’t worry, the auditors aren’t going to look at that.’

She said she had doubts about the system that Bankman-Fried said up, telling the court ‘if I knew this was happening in another exchange I would feel uncomfortable leaving my money there.’

Ellison also said that Bankman-Fried was ‘very ambitious’ and ‘very interested’ in politics. Bankman-Fried donated $10million to Joe Biden’s presidential campaign in 2020.

‘He said he thought it was very effective that you could get very high returns in terms of influence by spending relatively small amounts of money,’ Ellison said.

He also reportedly told Ellison there was a ‘five percent chance’ he would become President himself.

The US coastguard has recovered the remaining debris from the Titan sub.

Officials said the salvage mission conducted under an agreement with the US Navy was a follow-up to initial recovery operations on the ocean floor.

It comes almost four months after the five passengers on board the sub were killed as it tried to reach the wreck of the Titanic.

When it imploded, it was said to be roughly 1,600 feet (488 meters) away from the vessel.

The coastguard said today that the recovery and transfer of remaining parts was completed last Wednesday.

Investigators believe the Titan imploded as it made its descent into deep North Atlantic waters on June 18.

Stockton Rush, Chief Executive Officer and Founder (2009) of OceanGate Inc. World-renowned explorer Hamish Harding is among the five people who went missing aboard a tourist submarine visiting the shipwreck of the Titanic Monday morning, his family has confirmed. Harding's family said the 58-year-old British millionaire was aboard the missing OceanGate Expeditions submarine on Monday, a day after he shared his excitement about the trip
OceanGate’s CEO Stockton Rush briefed the other passengers

The multi-day search mounted after Titan went silent captured attention around the world.

The submersible was attempting to view the passenger liner that sank in 1912.

The coastguard previously said it recovered presumed human remains along with parts of the Titan after the debris field was located at a depth of 12,500 feet (3,800 metres).

The materials were offloaded at an unnamed port. The Coastguard’s Marine Board of Investigation is continuing its analysis and conducting witness interviews ahead of a public hearing on the tragedy.

OceanGate, the operator of the vessel, has since gone out of business. Among those killed in the implosion was Stockton Rush, the submersible’s pilot and chief executive of the company.

A US coastguard spokesperson said: ‘The salvage mission, which was conducted under an existing agreement with U.S. Navy Supervisor of Salvage & Diving, was a follow-up to initial recovery operations following the loss of the Titan submersible.

‘Investigators from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada joined the salvage expedition as part of their respective safety investigations.

‘The recovered evidence was successfully transferred to a U.S. port for cataloging and analysis.

‘Additional presumed human remains were carefully recovered from within Titan’s debris and transported for analysis by U.S. medical professionals.

‘The MBI is coordinating with NTSB and other international investigative agencies to schedule a joint evidence review of recovered Titan debris. This review session will help determine the next steps for necessary forensic testing.

‘The MBI will continue evidence analysis and witness interviews ahead of a public hearing regarding this tragedy.’

US President Joe Biden condemned the Palestinian militant group Hamas for raping Israeli women and parading them as ‘trophies’.

Biden called Hamas’ surprise attack on the Gaza Strip area that has prompted a four-day all-out war ‘an act of sheer evil’.

The president accused Hamas of existing for the sole purpose ‘to kill Jews’.

‘Parents butchered trying to protect their children,’ said Biden from the White House on Tuesday afternoon.

‘Entire families slain. Young people massacred attending a musical festival to celebrate peace.

‘Women raped, assaulted and paraded as trophies.’

Biden provided an update on the death toll of Americans caught in the bloodshed – at least 14, up from 11 the prior day. The surprise attack on Saturday killed about 1,000 people and was ‘pure unadulterated evil’, he said.

He added, ‘we now know that American citizens are among those being held by Hamas’, but did not disclose how many.

Hamas has threatened to execute hostages, Biden said.

‘The brutality of Hamas’s blood thirstiness brings to mind the worst rampages of ISIS,’ he said. ‘This is terrorism.’

Biden said that Hamas does not act for the rights of Palestinians and instead uses them as ‘human shields’.

Biden provided one of the most forceful condemnations of terrorism from a recent US president, and defended Israel’s response fighting back.

‘In this moment we must be crystal clear,’ he said. ‘We stand with Israel.’

Biden said the US will send more ammunition to replenish Israel’s Iron Dome and give more military assistance.

He warned other countries ‘thinking of taking advantage of the situation’ against entering the conflict: ‘I have one word: Don’t.’

‘Our hearts may be broken,’ he said, ‘But our resolve is clear.’

Biden left the State Dining Room of the White House without answering reporters’ questions.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will depart on Wednesday for Israel to ‘engage our Israeli partners directly about the situation on the ground and how we can continue to best support them in their fight against the terrorists who launched these horrific attacks’, said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller shortly after Biden’s remarks.

At least four Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies were injured after an explosion and fire at a training facility.

The blast occurred around 9.30am at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, California.

The prison is also used by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) as a training facility.

The deputies were using a mobile range at the facility when a fire broke out after a ‘training accident.’ The LASD has not commented any further on what may have caused the fire and explosion.

‘We’re still trying to determine that. We know for sure there was a fire,’ said LASD spokesperson Nicole Nishida.

Two of the deputies were hospitalized with critical injuries, while another two were treated for minor injuries.

The four deputies were transported to the hospital by other LASD deputies.

Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) arrived about 10 minutes after the explosion was reported.

A spokesperson for the LAFD said they were fighting the blaze slowly and cautiously because ‘live rounds’ were being stored at the mobile range.

Police have criminally charged a man who leaped into the North Tower Pool at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum on Monday.

Jeffrey Hernandez, 33, was arrested and charged with criminal mischief and trespassing after the terrifying jump, a New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.

Police responded to the incident at the monument in lower Manhattan around 1.30pm on Monday afternoon.

Hernandez was removed from the pool, then transported by EMS to Bellevue Hospital. He was treated for an injury to his left leg and is currently in stable condition.

Police have not commented on a possible motive for the dangerous jump. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

The two waterfalls contained in the North Tower and South Tower Pools are some of the largest man-made waterfalls in North America, according to the Memorial.

The pools, each about one acre in size, mark the former locations of both towers. They contain about 18 inches of water.

The first waterfall drops about 30 feet below the sidewalk. Water than falls into a ‘central void’ that drops another 20 feet further.

Video taken by onlookers appears to show Hernandez lying face-down in the pool, before slowly slipping in to the central void.

It is currently unclear how Hernandez was able to access the pool, where the names of the 2,983 victims of the 1993 bombing and 9/11 attacks are inscribed on bronze plaques.

The pools are the ‘focal point’ of the Memorial, and were intended by architect Michael Arad to represent ‘absence made visible.’

The Memorial was completed and opened on September 11, 2011, ten years after the attacks that destroyed the original towers. The museum opened three years later in 2014.

A man was shot and killed by police officers after ramming his car into the Chinese consulate in San Francisco.

The chaos unfolded around 3.09pm on Monday afternoon when the driver of a Honda Civic smashed through the front door of the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco’s Japantown neighborhood.

The car landed in a lobby area where about 20 people were waiting to apply for travel visas.

One witness told ABC7 the man began yelling ‘Where’s the f—–g CCP?’

CCP is a common abbreviation for the Chinese Communist Party.

Security guards at the consulate quickly rushed over to the smashed car and attempted to detain the driver as people evacuated from the building.

A video recorded at the scene shows people in the office running for their lives out of the smashed front door as security guards hold down the man near his car.

Moments later, officers from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) arrived at the scene.

Few details have been released about the suspect, and it is unclear if he was armed with a weapon.

No other injuries were reported after the terrifying collision.

Winters said the ‘very complex investigation’ was still active and ongoing.

A seven-year-old girl died after suffocating on a popped birthday balloon, her devastated mum has said.

Alexandra Hope Kelly was popping birthday decorations on Sunday with scissors when her mum, Channa Kelly, went to lie down.

But when she returned to the living room, she found her daughter face down with a balloon wrapped around her head.

‘I want people to know, so they can be aware,’ Channa, from Clinton, Tennessee, said.

‘That’s what took my baby, it was her birthday balloon – it’s hard to comprehend.’

Alexandra had turned seven-years-old on September 22.

‘She was wonderful, so vivacious, independent, she loved crafts, swimming – oh she was a little fis.,’ Channa said.

The cause of Alexandra’s death is yet to be confirmed.

This smiling 7-year-old girl has died after allegedly suffocating on a popped birthday balloon. Alexandra Hope was popping her birthday balloons in the city of Clinton, in the US state of Tennessee on Sunday, 1st October. Alexandra's mother, Channa Kelly went to the living room, and when she came back, she found her daughter facedown with one popped balloon over her head, according to local media.

Clinton authorities reported a child’s death last weekend.

The U.S. Consumer Protection Safety issued a warning regarding popped balloons: ‘Because of the danger of suffocation, the CPSC recommends that parents and guardians do not allow children under the age of eight to play with uninflated balloons without supervision.

‘The CPSC does not believe that a completely inflated balloon presents a hazard to young children. If the balloon breaks, however, CPSC recommends that parents immediately collect the pieces of the broken balloon and dispose of them out of the reach of young children.’

Police said they are investigating the incident.

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the cold case murder four decades ago of a former beauty queen.

Noelle Russo, 37, a ‘one-time teen-age beauty princess’, was last seen on June 24, 1983. Russo, of Rohnert Park, had gotten into a fight with her boyfriend and went to stay with a friend in Santa Rosa, SFGate reported. Her friend drove her to Courthouse Square to catch a bus back home that night. But instead, she vanished.

A few days later, a young boy stumbled into Russo’s body behind a real estate office in an unincorporated part of Rohnert Park, roughly 50 miles north of San Francisco. Russo was found naked and beaten to death near Sonoma State University.

Over the years, investigators gathered a significant amount of evidence and had persons of interest, but took no one into custody.

On October 2, police arrested one of the original persons of interest.

‘Alfredo Carretero Jr, was positively identified as a suspect in Ms Russo’s murder based on DNA and other evidence,’ stated the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office last Tuesday.

Carretero, 65, of Lakeport, has been charged with murder and is being held at the Main Adult Detention Facility with no bail.

Russo grew up in San Mateo County, California, and made headlines after being named Miss Burlingame at the age of 16 in 1962.

‘I couldn’t have been more surprised,’ she said at the time.

‘I never in the world thought I’d win. I just entered to please mother.’

The Press Democrat described Russo as a ‘one-time teen-age beauty princess’. Her friends said she would ride her bike and hitchhike, which was a matter of concern to them.

Russo married and divorced twice, and had one son.

If and how Carretero knew Russo has not been disclosed.

Carretero is scheduled to appear in court on October 18.

Anyone with information on the cold case murder is asked to contact the sheriff’s office.

A skydiver who died after making a hard landing on a front lawn has been identified as a 69-year-old lawyer.

Frederick Morello was found on the lawn of a home near a Titusville airpark in Florida around 12.30pm on Saturday, WKMG reported.

Morello, of Ormond Beach, practiced law out of Daytona Beach. An experienced skydiver, he posted dozens of pictures of himself in the sky on his law office website, in a section titled, ‘Fred’s passion’.

The section included the quote: ‘Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.’

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

Morello apparently tried to do a solo parachute jump.

‘The preliminary investigation revealed an adult male outfitted in parachute attire and gear was located on the lawn of a residence on the 2600 block of Merry Lane,’ stated Titusville police.

Morello was pronounced dead at the scene.

A surveillance camera on the property next door recorded the accident.

Vietnam veteran James Sconiers said the skydiver landed on his front yard.

‘He hit the ground. Bounced off the driveway into their grass. Almost like a basketball that’s just how hard he hit the ground like someone bounced him up,’ Sconiers told FOX 35 News. ‘It’s hard.’

Sconiers told WKMG that he asked the person, ‘Hey man can you hear me, can you hear me?’

But there was no reply.

It was not immediately known if the skydiver had gone on trips with the Skydive Space Center

‘Look at the video and look at what happened. Why did he fall so hard if all the safety mechanism in place?’ Sconiers said. ‘Something tells me there’s a problem there.’

Morello landed just blocks away from Skydive Space Center, which would not comment on if he had done trips with them before, according to the New York Post.

Police are investigating the incident.

A two-year-old boy drowned after wandering into his neighbor’s backyard pool as his mother slept.

Marcus Anthony Hall’s father, Anthony Hall, was at a loss for words over the death of his son, nicknamed Mar Mar, on Wednesday afternoon.

‘I don’t know how to explain this but i will try the best way,’ wrote Hall in a GoFundMe page.

‘There was a incident where his mother was sleeping and the kids snuck out of the house…

‘Marcus climbed into a Swimming pool and drown…

‘This story break my heart every time i have to tell it…

‘He was only two years old this is not fair to baby Marcus.’

The toddler left his family’s home the city of Oregon in Ohio while his father was at work. He and his four-year-old brother were alone with their sleeping mother, Hall said.

A neighbor saw one of the boys around 10.34am and called 911, WTVG reported.

‘There’s a baby outside in just a diaper chasing a dog,’ said the caller. ‘There’s no adults.’

About an hour later, the toddler’s mother called police.

‘I got woken up to the cops over here knocking on my door because they said that kids were running around outside, so when I woke up, only my 4-year-old here,’ she said, according to the TV station.

The mother confirmed to cops that her two-year-old was missing.

Mar Mar was found at the bottom of a neighbor’s pool. A cop dove into the pool and another officer performed CPR, before rushing him to a hospital. He was pronounced dead there.

A complaint about the pool has been filed with the city, arguing that it was required to have a fence around the perimeter.

Lucas County Children Services is investigating the death.

The GoFundMe page had raised more than $2,550 as of Monday evening.

‘Please anything help i just want my baby to be able to rest,’ Hall wrote. ‘I cant imagen what was going though his mind during all this.’

A portion of the 9/11 Museum and Memorial in New York City was chained off after a man jumped into the North Tower Pool.

A person was hospitalized after leaping nearly 45 feet into the pool marking the former location of the North Tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan.

The incident took place around 1.30pm on Monday afternoon, the NYPD said. The person was identified as a 33-year-old male.

The man was ‘taken out of the pool and brought to Bellevue Hospital,’ the NYPD told Metro.co.uk. He is currently being treated for an injury to his left leg.

The incident is still under investigation, and the man is currently not facing any charges.

It is unclear how the man was able to access the pool.

The Memorial, which opened on September 11, 2011, features two of the ‘largest manmade waterfalls in North America,’ according to the Memorial.

Both pools are about one acre in size, and each feature two drops of down about 50 feet below the sidewalk. The water inside the pool is about 18 inches deep.

The names of the 2,983 people killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 9/11 attacks are inscribed on plaques lining both pools.

Earlier this year, the remains of two additional victims were finally identified nearly 22 years after the attacks.

Investigators were able to positively identify the two victims, a man and a woman, matching a DNA sequence to body fragments found in the rubble of the towers.

The unidentified remains of about 1,000 more people are still being stored at the memorial.
