Richard Dunne has tipped Brighton star Evan Ferguson to join either Manchester United or Liverpool in a ‘dream’ move for the Irishman.

United made a £50m bid to sign the Irish teenager in the summer transfer window, an offer which was laughed off by Brighton, who want much more.

The Red Devils view Ferguson as a potential replacement for Anthony Martial and are hopeful of securing a deal given that the striker is a boyhood United fan.

But United are not the only club linked to Ferguson with rivals Manchester City thought to be keen on the 18-year-old.

Given his Irish background, though, Dunne has predicted Ferguson to join either United or Liverpool when the time comes for him to leave the Seagulls.

‘I’m sure Evan Ferguson would be delighted at the thought of playing for Liverpool and Manchester United as most Irish boys would dream of that,’ Dunne told BoyleSports.

‘I think it’ll happen for him in the future, but he’s still learning his trade at the moment at Brighton.

‘He’s in for some games, rested for others, and is still developing as a player. I’m sure Brighton will help him move on when he feels the time is right.

‘He’ll have the pick of all the top clubs when he does. You rarely get young players as versatile as him.

‘I think it’s too soon for him at the moment, but it won’t be long before it’s time to move on.’

Manchester United have opened talks with their young star Omari Forson over a new long-term contract and want to send him out on loan in January, according to reports.

The 19-year-old forward has not yet made his professional senior debut for United but is thought to have already caught Erik ten Hag’s attention.

Forson started out in the youth ranks of Tottenham and West Ham before switching to Old Trafford in 2019, where he has hugely impressed.

He was playing for United U18s when he was just 16-years-old and signed his first professional United contract two years ago.

Forson helped United win the FA Youth Cup last year and joined the first-team this summer for the pre-season tour of the United States, where he was handed a start against Borussia Dortmund.

He was named on the bench when United faced Bayern Munich in the Champions League this term while he has been in top form at youth level – scoring six goals and providing two assists across six games in the Premier League 2, the UEFA Youth League and the EFL Trophy since the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign.

Forson has entered the final year of his current deal and according to the Manchester Evening News, United are looking to hand him a new long-term deal and he is one of the players they may send out on loan in the January window.

Meanwhile, United intend to trigger extensions in the contracts of Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka but are yet to decide on the future of Anthony Martial.

All three are in the same situation as their deals run until the end of the current season, but the club has the option to extend the contracts by a further year, until 2025.

United have largely struggled since the start of the season with Alan Shearer blaming the club’s owners for the current problems at Old Trafford.

Dani Olmo is attracting attention from a string of big clubs as he seeks a new challenge, despite only signing a new RB Leipzig contract earlier this year.

The 25-year-old has been with the Bundesliga club since 2020 and signed his new deal over the summer, which runs until 2027.

However, Mundo Deportivo report that Manchester City are keen on the Spain international, while the likes of Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona are all fans of the midfielder as well.

SportBild report that the level of the interest in Olmo has seen him have a change of heart over his future and would be willing to make a big move if the opportunity arose.

Given that his contract at RB Leipzig has a release clause of €60 million (£52m), then the opportunity could well arise as it is not a fee that would put off the interested parties.

Olmo is currently dealing with a knee injury after making a brilliant start to the season, scoring a hat-trick in the German Super Cup against Bayern Munich and then twice in three Bundesliga matches.

He scored again for Spain in a 7-1 win over Georgia, but has not played since that thumping victory on 8 September.

After time in the youth ranks at Espanyol and Barcelona, Olmo has had a unique career so far after a surprise move to Dinamo Zagreb when he was just 16 and then a move to RB Leipzig three years ago.

He has won 32 caps for Spain, first appearing for his country in 2019 and scoring seven international goals since then.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has long been a fan of Olmo, showering him with praise after City beat Dinamo Zagreb 4-1 in the Champions League four years ago.

‘He’s a top player—he has a bright future, of course,’ Guradiola said back in 2019.

‘His performance today shows it. About the transfer and the money he deserves, that is not the point. The point is he is an incredible player and I am pretty sure he is able to play in the strong leagues in Europe.’

Manchester United star Diogo Dalot took a light-hearted dig at Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo for ‘always being on his phone’ following his brutal criticism of youngsters at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, 38, left United last December after an explosive interview with Piers Morgan in which he took aim at Erik ten Hag, the Glazers and his United team-mates.

The former Real Madrid forward said the younger generation ‘don’t care’ and they are distracted by ‘new technologies’.

‘Their hunger [is different]. I think they have things more easily, everything’s easy, they don’t suffer – and they don’t care,’ said Ronaldo.

‘I don’t mean only a few in Manchester United, but all the teams in all leagues in the world, the youngsters are not the same of my generation. But you cannot blame them, because it’s part of the life and the new generation, the new technologies that distract them.

‘It doesn’t surprise me. But in the same way it’s a shame because if they have the best examples in front of your eyes, and if they don’t at least copy what you did.

When Ronaldo was asked to single out players in United’s squad that shared his mentality, he chose cited Dalot as an exception.

‘In Manchester United I can mention Dalot, he’s young, but very professional but I don’t doubt that he’s going to have longevity in football because he’s young, he’s smart, intelligent and he’s very professional.’

Dalot linked up with Ronaldo this week for Portugal’s European Championship qualifiers against Slovakia and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

And, in a clear nod to Ronaldo’s previous criticism of the younger generations at United, Dalot joked that the veteran is ‘always on his phone’.

‘This new generation always on the phone,’ joked Dalot.

The defender accompanied the comment with a string of emojis to illustrate that he was joking, before tagging Ronaldo in the post.

Newcastle are in the early stages of plotting a January move for Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe.

The 23-year-old hardly featured last season during an injury-ravaged campaign which cost him a place in England’s World Cup squad.

Smith Rowe returned to full fitness over the summer and played a pivotal role in England’s European Under-21 Championship triumph.

The versatile midfielder arrived back in pre-season training hoping to force his way back into Mikel Arteta’s plans but opportunities have been in short supply.

Indeed, Smith Rowe’s only start so far this term came against Brentford in the Carabao Cup last month, while he was an unused substitute in Sunday’s landmark win over Manchester City.

Speaking after the 1-0 win against the Bees, Arteta warned the Arsenal No.10 was still working his way back to peak condition.

He said: ‘I think he had really good moments in the first half, and the game was much easier for him, the way he was developing with his qualities, and the game we started to play after five or ten minutes in the second half, and then after he was struggling more.

‘Physically, he’s still not there to play 90 minutes, we have to bear in mind that we have four or five players in that field and that was big concern for us today in the line-up, because we have seven at Colney that are not fit now.’

According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle have already held talks to map out their plan of action for the January window and Smith Rowe has emerged already as a potential target.

Newcastle have made a strong start to the season, both at home and abroad, and will be keen to add to their squad when the window reopens.

Arsenal are said to value the Hale End Academy graduate, who is also reported to be on West Ham’s radar, at around £50million.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has admitted he would ‘love’ to sign for Real Madrid on a permanent basis from Chelsea.

The Spain international left Chelsea on loan over the summer with Real desperate for a new goalkeeper after Thibaut Courtois suffered a long-term injury.

The Belgian, who, ironically, was replaced by Kepa when he himself left Stamford Bridge in 2018, tore his ACL in August and is not expected to be back until around next March.

Kepa was expected to leave west London over the summer, having endured a tough five years at the club and especially after Robert Sanchez was signed from Brighton to replace him.

However, the 29-year-old previously claimed that Mauricio Pochettino actually wanted him to stay and compete with Sanchez for No.1 status, but he opted to join Real feeling he needed a change.

And it now seems that he wants that change to be permanent, telling Spanish TV, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano: Of course I’d love to stay at Real Madrid in the future.

‘Who doesn’t want to stay at this club? I’m very, very happy here.’

Brighton & Hove Albion v Chelsea FC: Premier League Summer Series

Kepa has made nine appearances for Los Blancos so far, keeping five clean sheets and conceding just seven goals to help his side go top of the La Liga table.

Come next summer, he’ll have just one year left on his Chelsea contract meaning Real could secure his services for a cut-price fee if they wanted.

The player became the most expensive goalkeeper of all-time when the Blues signed him from Athletic Bilbao for over £71million, going onto win the Champions League, Europa League and Club World Cup.

However, following his debut campaign, he struggled for form and found himself usurped by Edouard Mendy for a time, and while he wrestled back the No.1 spot last season his performances still came under fire.

Luton Town have confirmed the signing of former England and Tottenham star Andros Townsend on a short-term contract until January.

It had been reported that Townsend had been training with the Hatters with the aim of securing a return to Premier League football since leaving Everton at the end of last season.

The winger came very close to signing for Burnley over the summer, only for the Clarets to rescind their contract offer at the last minute.

The 32-year-old brings with him plenty of top-flight experience having racked up 264 appearances for Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Everton, but he hasn’t played since March 2022 due to an ACL injury.

‘I feel like it’s a good fit and these last couple of weeks have been good for both parties. I think it had to be right and I feel over the last two weeks we’ve had a look at each other and done that,’ Townsend told Luton’s official website.

‘I’ve seen where I can help this team and on the flipside the manager has seen where I can help – whether that’s on the pitch, in the dressing room or on the training field – with my enthusiasm and experience.

‘Plus, Luton are my local team – I live 20-25 minutes away so I’ve kept my eye on their progress and watching the Championship play-off final and see them win promotion was great for the club.

‘I never thought I’d pull on the Luton shirt, so it’s a huge honour to play again in the Premier League for this club, and hopefully get help this club get as many points as we can and see where it takes us.’

Townsend, who will wear the No.30 shirt for his new club, has a tough task on his hands to keep Luton up in their maiden Premier League campaign.

Rob Edwards’ side are 17th in the table having won just one of their first eight games, while only Bournemouth have scored fewer than their six goals.

In the top-flight, Townsend has scored 25 goals and made 28 assists, including three strikes that won the Premier League Goal of the Month award, with his thunderous volley for Palace against Manchester City in 2018 winning Goal of the Season.

The winger also scored three goals in 13 caps for England, with his final appearance for the Three Lions coming back in 2016.

Romelu Lukaku has described events leading up to his Chelsea exit this summer as ‘shocking’ and claims there were moments before his move to Roma that made him ‘explode’.

The striker spent last season on loan at Inter and was expected to complete a permanent move to the Serie A club in the summer transfer window.

However, Inter were angered after learning that Lukaku had also been negotiating with Juventus, whose own supporters staged multiple protests against signing the Belgium international.

Lukaku eventually returned to Chelsea in the summer but was made to train away from Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team squad before he eventually joined Roma on loan.

‘Most of the people in the room know me. You know that I don’t like to beat around the bush. I will speak in time but if I really said how it all went last summer everyone would be shocked,’ Lukaku said during a press conference with Belgium’s national team on Wednesday.

‘There were moments when I really could explode, five years ago I probably would have done that too.

‘Now I have concentrated on what I can do best – playing football.

‘As soon as the negotiations [with Roma] started, I became well informed about the club, the supporters. I must also thank Radja [Nainggolan] who gave me a lot of information. I spent a lot of time talking to Jose Mourinho. The rest is work.

‘I worked very hard alone this summer to the point of surprising the Roma staff. I was in a positive mindset, I hadn’t played at my true level for two years and I had to do my best to be back. I was lucky to be able to count on great teammates and staff who helped me.

‘It was said that I was going to sign there or there but that was false. I preferred to remain silent.

’90 per cent of what was said in the media was false and it was hard to keep my mouth shut. I take an example from LeBron James. Every year we hit him. I’m not LeBron but he had the character to always respond and show that he’s there.

‘During the summer I saw what people said about me and I trained to be there the day I had to perform. One day I will tell the truth. The others will also have to assume it at that time.’

When asked about interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in the summer, Lukaku said: ‘I was honoured by that interest but after the conversations I was not completely convinced.

‘They are the biggest club in the Middle East and the league there will become one of the biggest in the world, but I didn’t want to leave Europe yet.’

Manchester United v Brentford FC - Premier League
Mason Mount has faced some early criticism since joining Man Utd this summer (Picture: Getty)

Louis Saha has slammed Manchester United summer signing Mason Mount and wants his old club to bring in one of Brighton’s star players in January.

United signed England international midfielder Mount from Chelsea this summer in a £60m deal but he has already faced some early criticism amid a slow start to the season for Erik ten Hag’s side.

United have lost half of their eight Premier League matches and have also suffered defeats in their first two Champions League group games.

Mount has registered just one assist across six appearances for United this season, which came in the Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace.

‘Man Utd are relying on one or two players to create, and I haven’t seen enough of Mount yet,’ Saha told King Casino Bonus.

‘His creativity is nowhere to be seen. I didn’t see any positive runs from him against Brentford. His timing is off, too, and he can’t make chances by playing like this.

‘I hope that the players find their groove, and once they do, they’ll be hard to play against. They have the energy, and when players like Bruno Fernandes start making those passes, I’ll be more confident in Man Utd.

‘I think Mount can be a lot better, but I’d say the fee was too much. I think Chelsea were playing a game with the fee, even if the market is very competitive and a lot of players have moved for similar fees.

‘I’d say, based on what we’ve seen, Mount isn’t performing and I’ve seen Casemiro play more offensively than Mount. That’s a crazy thing to say, but it’s true.’

Saha, meanwhile, wants United to launch a bid for Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma in the January transfer window, with the Japan international winger massively impressing in the Premier League since joining the Seagulls in 2021.

Olympique de Marseille v Brighton & Hove Albion: Group B - UEFA Europa League 2023/24

‘I would like to see Mitoma arrive at Old Trafford,’ Saha added. ‘He’s a very exciting player and he never seems to have any doubt on the ball.

‘I love his energy and the way he plays with a smile. Mitoma is great to watch, and his attitude would be perfect for any club. Some players think too much, but Mitoma relies on instinct.

‘You can tell he’s worked very hard on the training ground to achieve this, and now he’s got to a point where he looks like a natural. Managers know exactly what they’re going to get from Mitoma, and he’d be a strong asset to any club.

‘He’d be very exciting at Man Utd as they tend to have wide players who overthink.

‘They play as if every defender is quicker than them, and that’s why they don’t often dribble or cross as much as they should.

‘They’re too worried that they won’t get past defenders. They need to be more direct, and the only United forward who possesses that directness is Rasmus Hojlund. The other players are thinking too much.’

Inter Milan are eying a January move for Chelsea striker Armando Broja, according to reports.

The Albania international, who came through Chelsea’s academy, recently took Nicolas Jackson’s spot in the starting XI after the Senegal star’s suspension.

Broja has only just returned from a long injury and was handed a start against west London rivals Fulham last week as he registered a goal in a 2-0 victory.

He was rewarded with a start in Chelsea’s next game, a 4-1 win at Burnley, but only lasted 45 minutes as he was hauled off following a poor performance.

Broja hardly had a kick at Turf Moor and was slowing play down as Mauricio Pochettino decided to replace him with Jackson, who went on to score instead.

According to Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, Serie A giants Inter are considering a swoop for Broja in January, and are convinced Chelsea can be tempted in a deal if the 22-year-old continues to struggle with ‘continuity’.

They claim that a loan deal could work for both clubs and that the relationship between Chelsea and Inter remains strong despite Romelu Lukaku’s failed move to the Italian side this summer.

Inter have admired Broja for a long time and were keeping tabs on his season-long loan at Vitesse in 2020-21, where he scored 11 goals in 34 games.

Pochettino lauded Broja last week as the Chelsea head coach said: ‘When you start to feel the player in a training session, you can feel the potential. Broja has amazing potential, now it’s about how he recovers from the long period he was out.

‘He is a very talented player, we trust him. Now he needs time, to feel complete. In his body, if not in his mind also. Sometimes a long injury also impacts your mind. He is in a very good mood, a very good way, he is working really hard and I hope he can improve in the next few weeks and be a player that we really trust.’

Manchester City v Chelsea: Emirates FA Cup Third Round

Trevoh Chalobah is very likely to leave Chelsea in the next transfer window, with Bayern Munich still interested in signing the defender, according to reports in Germany.

The 24-year-old is yet to play for the Blues this season, falling down the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino and also dealing with a hamstring injury.

Thiago Silva has remained ahead of Chalobah in Pochettino’s plans, while Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi have also become first team regulars.

Both Tottenham and Bayern made approaches for Chalobah during the summer transfer window but neither could agree a deal with the Blues as they looked for loan moves.

Nottingham Forest had a bid accepted for the centre-back, worth an initial £25m, plus £5m in add-ons, but the player rejected it, holding out for a move to a bigger club.

A January transfer is now very much on the cards, with Sky Sports Germany reporting that Bayern remain keen on the defender and he is very likely to leave Stamford Bridge at the next available opportunity.

After failing to move Chalobah on during the summer transfer window, Pochettino insisted that he was still in his first team plans.

‘His future is going to be [here]. He is in our plans,’ the manager said of Chalobah in September. ‘No one is going to decide for me. He is going to be involved. Now we have finished the transfer window, he is going to be involved in the decisions. Chalobah and the other players in the squad are part of my plans. Some players don’t play, but that is my choice.

‘There is nothing to talk to him about this. He is a Chelsea player and he will have the same opportunities as the others.’

Manchester United have started scouting Portugal international centre-back Goncalo Inacio ahead of a possible January move, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has spent his entire senior career at Sporting Lisbon having progressed through the Portuguese club’s youth academy.

Inacio lifted the Primeira Liga title with Sporting in 2021 and has made 132 appearances to date, establishing himself as a key player.

He has helped Sporting to an unbeaten league start this season and they are top of the Primeira Liga table after eight games, winning seven of their fixtures.

Inacio’s impressive performances saw him earn his first cap for Portugal back in March and he scored twice in a 9-0 win over Luxembourg in September.

According to reports, Inacio is the latest player United have added to their list of potential centre-back targets and the club are now actively monitoring him.

Erik ten Hag is keen to bring in a new defender in the January transfer window and United are also looking at Benfica’s Antonio Silva, Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba with no final decision yet made.

Many factors will influence which defender United prioritise including the skills of each player, how much they will cost and the results of the scouting reports.

United’s defence has been significantly weakened by various injuries this season, with centre-back Lisandro Martinez set to be ruled out for up to three months.

The Red Devils have made a poor start to the 2023-24 campaign, with Ten Hag’s side 10th in the Premier League after losing half of their eight fixtures, while they have suffered Champions League defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

Manchester United v Crystal Palace - Carabao Cup Third Round

Maurice Steijn named a number of former Ajax stars he would love to have at the club now, including Manchester United outcast Donny van de Beek.

The Dutch giants are going through an awful start to the season, winning just one of their opening six Eredivisie games and sitting 16th in the table.

Steijn joined from Sparta Rotterdam in the summer and is struggling badly, falling to a second successive home defeat on Sunday, beaten 2-1 by AZ Alkmaar.

After the defeat the 49-year-old hit out at the quality of players available to him at Ajax, bemoaning the fact that many big names have left in recent years, including Van de Beek.

‘I look at the teenagers who can offer more than the players on the bench,’ said Steijn. ‘(Some of our senior players) Are not yet able to bring it in training and during substitute appearances.

‘No, I haven’t written them off. But I make different choices based on what I see in training and what I think the team needs.

‘Of course, this team would benefit incredibly from experienced players, such as Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek. Daley Blind and Dusan Tadic also excelled. We don’t have those guys, and that is a disadvantage for the team.’

Van de Beek has made two brief substitute appearances for Manchester United this season, once in the Premier League and another in the League Cup.

The 26-year-old was available for transfer over the summer but there appears to have been no interest in his services after an entirely forgettable time with the Red Devils.

The Netherlands international signed from Ajax in 2020 for an initial £35m but has never been able to hold down a place in the first team, making just 62 appearances for the club, scoring twice.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney is keen on a move to Arsenal in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Toney, who is currently preparing to return from an eight-month betting ban and has been playing in behind-closed-doors matches, is strongly linked to Arsenal.

The Gunners are not the only club looking to bring in the Englishman, though, with Chelsea also thought to be plotting a bid while Manchester United and Tottenham could also join the race to sign the 27-year-old.

But according to the Daily Mail, Toney is ‘coveting’ Arsenal just as much as the north Londoners are coveting him, meaning the Gunners may be in prime position to land his signature when the transfer window opens up this winter.

They add that Mikel Arteta is taking Arsenal’s goal deficiency ‘very seriously’ and claim that Toney ‘ticks a lot of boxes’ for the Spaniard in terms of his character and physicality, despite the fact that a deal for him may impact summer spending.

It is thought that Brentford want at least £80m to part ways with their star striker, who has registered 68 goals and 21 assists across 124 games for the Bees.

Arsenal have also scouted Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez as potential alternative option, who would cost considerably less than Toney.

Paul Merson, meanwhile, feels Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah aren’t good enough to win Arsenal the Premier League title and has urged his old club to sign Toney.

‘I’ve always said it from day one – Eddie Nketiah is not going to win you the Premier League,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘I don’t even think Gabriel Jesus takes them to the next level.

‘Ivan Toney is available for them in January – there aren’t many centre forwards around in the world. They’re a dying breed. Toney is a good player, he can hold the ball up, he’s good in the air. Arsenal might have to go for him.’

Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle are all still interested in Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, despite the teenager seemingly committing his future to the German club by signing a new contract.

The 19-year-old spent time in the youth ranks at Reading and Manchester City before moving to Dortmund in 2020, where he broke into the first team last year.

The teenager is not quite a regular in the first team yet, but has made two Bundesliga starts this season and Dortmund are clearly excited about his prospects as he signed a new contract which runs until 2028 earlier this month.

On the inking of the new deal, Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl said: ‘We are convinced that his development is far from complete and are pleased that Jamie has decided ahead of time for a long-term future at BVB despite the great interest of several top clubs in Europe.’

The contract has not quelled interest in Bynoe-Gittens from his homeland, though, with German publication Bild reporting that Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle remain keen on him and the Gunners lead the race for his signature.

Any move would not happen until at least next summer, but the Premier League outfits are continuing to track the England Under-21 international as he progresses in Germany.

Bynoe-Gittens has followed in the footsteps of English stars Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho by moving to Dortmund and he says watching others do so successfully inspired his switch to Germany.

‘Seeing other players before me doing it persuaded me that I could try that as well,’ said the Londoner.

‘The first year was tough, because Covid meant that there were no games. Then when we came back in 2021 I was injured for four months. After Christmas time, I started playing more games and then that’s when I broke into the senior team.

‘I had to learn German quickly. I was a very shy person back then, so I had to learn to speak more and to ask for things that I might not ordinarily have asked for. If I was going to the shops or getting the bus to town and having to find the right way to go, I needed to do it.’

Chelsea have reportedly told Roma how much they must pay to sign Romelu Lukaku permanently next summer amid his impressive form on loan.

Lukaku has registered seven goals across his opening eight games for Jose Mourinho’s side in Serie A and the Europa League respectively.

Chelsea have been trying to offload Lukaku for a while – but after they were unable to secure a permanent exit – he moved to Roma on a season-long loan.

His glowing start at Roma means Chelsea may be able to secure a bigger fee for him in the summer of 2024 than they had previously thought.

According to reports, Chelsea have already fixed a price for Lukaku, and are looking to receive £37m for the 30-year-old Belgium international striker, who is under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2026.

Chelsea splashed out a whopping £97.5m to sign Lukaku in 2021, brining him back to west London for a second spell.

But it ended up being a total nightmare for both the club and player, with Lukaku sent out on loan to Inter Milan last term.

He was linked with permanent moves to various clubs in the summer transfer window, including Juventus, but a deal did not get over the line despite Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirming Lukaku was not in his plans.

It is thought that Lukaku was forced to train with Chelsea U21s this summer, making it clear that he had no future at the club.

Meanwhile, it emerged last month that Lukaku convinced Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku to snub Chelsea, according to Anderlecht’s academy director.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester City - Premier League
Pedro Neto is likely to leave Wolves next year (Picture: Getty Images)

Arsenal retain a long-standing interest in Wolves winger Pedro Neto, but will face competition for his signing if they make a move for him next year.

The 23-year-old has been at Wolves since 2019, making over 100 appearances for the club, although he has not been a regular on the scoresheet, scoring just 12 times in all competitions.

However, he has looked extremely dangerous at times and has attracted the attention of bigger clubs, notably Arsenal.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano told Caught Offside that the Gunners have been tracking the Portugal international for a long time and were interested in signing him in the summer of 2022.

Wolves were not interested in letting him go then, but Romano reports that a move in 2024 looks very likely, be it in January or the summer transfer window.

Arsenal are not the only team to be keen on Neto, though, with the race to sign him described as ‘absolutely open.’

Neto’s five assists so far this season mean that no player has provided more in the Premier League this campaign, level with Tottenham’s James Maddison and Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier.

It is no surprise that Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has been delighted with the former Braga man, not just for his quality but also his work rate.

‘He’s worked extremely hard,’ said O’Neil of Neto. ‘It’s all him really, his commitment of what we’re tyring to do, his understanding of the tactical stuff that we give him, his understanding of all the extras we do and how committed he is to them and wanting to improve, and just his work rate, his enthusiasm around the place, I’m delighted for him.

‘You’re pleased when everybody does well, but when someone has committed and is enthusiastic and willing to work as Pedro is gets some success, you’re really pleased for them. He’s been a huge positive since I’ve walked in.’

Jarrod Bowen has rejected interest from Liverpool and Newcastle United with the Englishman reportedly set to sign a new seven-year deal at West Ham.

The 26-year-old has been in fine form for the east Londoners so far this season, registering five goals and two assists across eight matches.

Bowen, who can operate as a right winger or centre-forward, scored the winning goal in the Europa Conference League final last term as West Ham lifted their first major trophy in over 40 years.

His impressive performances so far this season have seen Bowen called up for England, with Gareth Southgate naming the player in his squad this week ahead of upcoming games against Australia and Italy.

Bowen has attracted transfer interest from both Liverpool and Newcastle but according to talkSPORT, he is set to snub them both and sign a seven-year contact at West Ham.

It is thought that Bowen will become West Ham’s highest-paid player and the club were keen to tie him down before the January transfer window opened up.

There is no release clause in Bowen’s new deal, meaning any side looking to sign him will likely have to pay a big transfer fee.

Bowen joined West Ham from Hull City in 2020 and he has registered 45 goals and 33 assists across 166 games for David Moyes’ side.

Speaking in May, Bowen admitted that Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah was a key inspiration for him and that he was trying to model his game on the Egyptian, along with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

Off the pitch, meanwhile, Bowen is known for his relationship with reality TV star Dani Dyer, who is the daughter of actor and West Ham superfan Danny Dyer.

Juventus want to sign Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho on loan in January before a £60m permanent move next summer, according to reports.

The 23-year-old’s career at Old Trafford looks over after Sancho was involved in a nasty fall-out with manager Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman publicly slamming his player in the media for his poor application in training.

Sancho issued a public statement in response and claimed he had been made a ‘scapegoat’ by Ten Hag – and the situation does not seem to be reaching any kind of resolution – with Sancho banned from all of United’s first-team facilities.

The Englishman has been urged to apologise to Ten Hag by his United team-mates but he is unwilling to do so and it seems that he destined to depart in the January transfer window.

He has been linked with a return to his former club Borussia Dortmund, although the German side are believed to have some concerns over his discipline – and despite reports that the winger has been in ‘regular contract’ with the Bundesliga club’s managerThe Sun report that Sancho does not want to return to them.

They claim that Sancho would be more keen on joining a club in Serie A and that Italian giants Juventus want to bring in Sancho on loan in January before potentially turning it into a £60m permanent move in the next summer window.

It is thought that Juventus want United to pay half of Sancho’s wages if they are to take him on loan.

Meanwhile, La Liga side Barcelona have also been linked with a January loan for Sancho.

Sancho has registered 12 goals and six assists across 82 games for United since he joined them from Dortmund in 2021.

He has featured three times for United this season, all from the bench, but has not been named in a matchday squad since August’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta has hinted Arsenal are not in position to sign a new striker in January amid speculation linking them with a move for Ivan Toney.

The Gunners spent heavily in the summer transfer window, breaking their own transfer record to sign Declan Rice from West Ham for a fee which could eventually rise to £105 million.

Goalkeeper David Raya, defender Jurrien Timber and the versatile Kai Havertz took Arsenal’s spending over the £200m mark as Arteta opted to shy away from signing a recognised centre forward.

The Arsenal manager even allowed Folrain Balogun to join Monaco, leaving Arsenal with just Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus to rely on for goals.

Between them, the pair have managed just three Premier League goals so far this season, but Arteta insists he retains faith in Jesus and Nketiah, while suggesting Arsenal may not have the resources to spend heavily when the transfer window opens.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s summit meeting with Manchester City, Arteta was asked whether he needed another striker and said: ‘We believe in the players that we have first of al.,

‘Because we have the resources that we have secondly, and at the moment we feel we are covering that position.’

Toney is currently serving an eight-month ban for breaching betting regulations but will be available to play again come the turn of the year.

The 27-year-old stepped up his preparations ahead of his comeback with a goal in a behind closed doors friendly, much to the delight of his current manager Thomas Frank.

‘It was so good (to see him back playing),” the Brentford boss said.

‘I spoke with him just before he went on the pitch and said to him: ‘enjoy it’. (he said) ‘I will’ – and you could see he would really enjoy it, to just get out there and play football.

‘It looked like he enjoyed it. He does what Ivan does – scored a goal. It was very good to see. He was happy after.’

Liverpool wanted Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie over the summer and remain in talks over a move in January, confirms the player’s agent.

The 21-year-old has impressed since arriving in Germany from Argentinian side Talleres in 2021, quickly becoming a regular at centre-back for the Bundesliga side.

He was attracting attention from the Premier League at the start of this year, with Tottenham making a bid for him in January, but Leverkusen turning it down.

The Ecuador international’s agent, Manuel Sierra, has confirmed that Liverpool showed an interest in his client over the last transfer window as well and remain keen ahead of January.

However, the centre-back will not come cheap, with the agent revealing that Leverkusen will want a lot more than the €6m (£5.1m) they paid for him.

‘Liverpool were interested in him [Hincapie], but at that time they chose to invest in the midfield,’ Sierra told Bolavip. ‘For January they are talking like other clubs, it will not be less than €50 million (£43m).’

Leverkusen will be able to charge plenty for their young defender as he only signed a new contract in February, which will run until 2027.

On the contract, Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said: ‘Piero’s signing 18 months ago was an investment in the future, back then he was a talented central defender with really big potential.

‘He became a key performer for our Werkself a long time ago, he has shown his international quality in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League and recently at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Piero is one of the key elements in the team who we can count on to help us achieve ambitious targets in the next few years.’

Roma ready to sack Jose Mourinho and target Hansi Flick as his replacement https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/07/roma-ready-to-sack-jose-mourinho-and-have-replacement-lined-up-19622823/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/07/roma-ready-to-sack-jose-mourinho-and-have-replacement-lined-up-19622823/#respond Sat, 07 Oct 2023 08:39:49 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19622823

Roma are ready to sack Jose Mourinho, according to reports in Italy.

Mourinho side have endured a difficult start to the new Serie A season with three defeats in their first seven games, including a 2-1 loss at home to AC Milan.

Roma have shown signs of improvement over the past week as they followed up a 2-0 win against Frosinone with a 4-0 victory against Servette in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

However, Correire dello Sport reports that Roma’s owner, Dan Friedkin, wanted to sack Mourinho after the team’s 4-1 defeat away to Genoa on September 28 and the American billionaire is still considering a change.

The report claims that Friedkin remains intent on sacking Mourinho and a defeat to Cagliari on Sunday could seal the Portuguese’s fate.

It’s also claimed that Friedkin has already lined up former Germany and Bayern Munich head coach Hansi Flick as Mourinho’s replacement.

Flick is currently out of work after he was sacked as Germany’s head coach following a 4-1 defeat to Japan in a friendly last month.

Before his time with Germany’s national team, the 58-year-old spent two seasons at Bayern Munich and guided the team to the quadruple in 2020.

Mourinho, meanwhile, is currently in his third season with Roma having joined them in 2021.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager ended Roma’s 14-year wait for a trophy in his first season as he guided the club to victory in the Europa Conference League.

Last season, Roma were beaten by Sevilla in the Europa League final and finished sixth in Serie A, seven points off a Champions League spot.

Mourinho has also left the door open for a move to the Saudi Pro League.

‘I will definitely come during the my free time but my belief is also that I will work there,’ Mourinho said in an interview with Elhekayashow.

‘I don’t know when but I’m pretty sure it will happen.

‘I’m in Rome, I’m focused and I’ll give everything until my last day. Nobody knows the future but it’s something I will definitely do.’

Moises Caicedo’s agent admits Liverpool transfer would have been ‘more stable’ than Chelsea https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/05/moises-caicedos-agent-reveals-liverpool-advantage-during-chelsea-transfer-talks-19608250/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/05/moises-caicedos-agent-reveals-liverpool-advantage-during-chelsea-transfer-talks-19608250/#respond Thu, 05 Oct 2023 09:38:17 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19608250

Moises Caicedo’s agent admits Liverpool represented a ‘more stable project’ than Chelsea and says Jurgen Klopp’s personal approach left the midfielder ‘dizzy’.

The Ecuador international was at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war between Liverpool and Chelsea in the final month of the summer transfer window and was granted permission from Brighton to undergo a medical with Klopp’s side after their £110 million offer was accepted.

However, Chelsea were given time to submit an improved bid and ended up agreeing a British-record £115m fee with Brighton.

Caicedo’s representative, Manuel Sierra, insists the midfielder was intent on joining Chelsea due to their persistent interest since the January window but concedes that Liverpool’s proposal was difficult to ignore.

When asked about Caicedo’s transfer saga involving Chelsea and Liverpool in the summer, Sierra told Futbol sin Cassette: ‘It’s true that the Arsenal thing in January was an offer that, at time, didn’t seem insurmountable, Moises fought for his dream at that moment, maybe it wasn’t the time as I’ve always said because it’s true that with Brighton there was always talk about the issue of leaving, since we signed our representation contract.

‘There was always talk of leaving in the summer market, of course in those 10 days according to the strict representation contract, we came to the fore to negotiate. There was no time but I think it was a moment that we had to try, we had the verbal commitment at all times that it was good that they wanted to improve the conditions for Moises, that they wanted him to be calm so that he could play the rest of the season and that in the summer he was going to leave.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo

‘It’s true that Chelsea were always there since January, what happened is that in January they couldn’t pay, they couldn’t go crazy because they had to go with one or the other, they couldn’t go with both of them and I didn’t know what Brighton were going to ask for, Brighton were not going to sell even for £1 billion.

‘The issue of not going to Liverpool instead of Chelsea was also very questioned, the offers were similar in every way, the issue is that due to a question of values and a question of principles and of giving the floor to someone, when Liverpool’s offer arrived, Brighton were asked for time so that Chelsea could match it, they did that, they surpassed it and he ended up at Chelsea because he had given the word to Chelsea and he told them for quite some time.

‘Liverpool appeared very late and with a word given to Chelsea, with everything agreed, it was said that Moises Caicedo himself was already training in a Chelsea camp [before officially signing]. Let’s be clear, he never did anything while he had contact with Brighton, the only thing he did was go to the locker room to pick up everything and he told them clearly, ‘I’m not going to play here again’, to make it clear. It was the only way to make it clear because in the end you always talk to a teammate, the teammate goes to the coach or goes to someone from the board and they say, ‘no, there is a possibility that Moises will stay’, time goes by and that’s what we didn’t want so a month later, when he came back from the situation in New York, he was there for the pre-season with Brighton, I travelled there and met with the owner of Brighton and the sporting director and there between the four of us we talked about something that we later saw a lot of reality. This drastic decision was made because it was the only way to be able to leave.

‘Liverpool were always interested. We always had meetings during those months between January and May but since May we never heard from them again and of course we were surprised that suddenly they appeared with something [an offer] that they said that they couldn’t do.

‘The first thing we are told is, ‘tomorrow you have to go to Liverpool until you pass a medical examination’. Of course, what is our reaction going to be if we have not negotiated, we have not spoken, we have not seen anything since May.

‘The problem was Brighton but when they tell us tomorrow, ‘you can go to Liverpool’, well of course the reaction is fine but the funny thing is that they didn’t tell us, they told us to undergo a medical with Liverpool without having an agreement, without having said, ‘yes’, even the club wrote to Moises, ‘with permission from Brighton’, and so on, but our phone conversations were clear at all times, we were clear, as long as Chelsea offered the same conditions that Liverpool could do with Brighton, and as I say they surpassed it, so there was no complaint.

‘It is very complicated, imagine that Jurgen Klopp is writing to you, that Liverpool is calling you, we are talking about something very big, that is, one of the best teams in the world, just like Chelsea, and with a more established and more stabilised project than what Chelsea have today, which is a very ambitious project with a view to two, three years ahead.

‘When Liverpool came and approached in that way, obviously Moises gets dizzy, I get dizzy myself, but Chelsea were by our side at all times asking us to go, they wanted an hour so that we could tell Brighton, so that they could match the offer and they gave them an hour and it ended in two days of negotiation.’

Louis Saha feels Manchester United need more attacking options and insists Ivan Toney can ‘adapt to any team’ amid interest from Chelsea and Arsenal.

Brentford striker Toney played in behind-closed-doors friendly this week as he prepares to return from an eight-month betting ban in January.

Chelsea and Arsenal are both plotting a move for the Englishman when the transfer window reopens this winter.

But Saha feels his old club United – as well as Tottenham – could join the race to sign the 27-year-old, who has registered 68 goals and 21 assists across 124 games for Thomas Frank’s side.

‘Ivan can adapt to any team,’ Saha told Betfred. ‘He’s mentally very strong, so I’m confident that he will make the right decision for himself.

Brentford v Arsenal - Carabao Cup Third Round
Toney has a watching brief at the minute (Picture: Getty)

‘He can play in any team because of how strong and technically gifted he is. Ivan’s also very mobile and has the right formula you need to play as a striker for any club.

‘Manchester United certainly need more options up front as all the top clubs have various options to choose from.

‘Tottenham also definitely need another striker because the combination between Son Heung-min and Richarlison isn’t working too well at present, so that’s another possible move for Ivan.

‘All we know is that a lot of teams will be interested in signing him in January and I’m sure he would be a key player at a big club rather than just being another member of the squad.’

Despite Frank’s desire to keen Toney at Brentford, it is believed that the Bees would be open to selling him for around £80m.

Erik ten Hag retains the full support of Manchester United’s board, who believe he is the right man for the job at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has overseen a disastrous start to the campaign, that has seen the club lost six of their last ten matches.

The last of those defeats came in a 3-2 defeat against Galatasaray at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, when United twice led.

With zero points in the Champions League and just nine from seven matches in the Premier League, the pressure is mounting on Ten Hag.

But that pressure is external, with the Guardian reporting that the board fully back Ten Hag in the long-term.

The board sympathises with the severity of United’s injury list this term – which at one point saw United without 12 first-team players.

Sofyan Amrabat was twice exposed against Galatasaray, with the Moroccan being forced to play as a left-back in the absence of Luke Shaw, Sergio Reguilon and Tyrell Malacia.

Rasmus Hojlund arrived at the club with an injury, while Mason Mount was ruled out for a month on his second appearance in a United shirt.

Ten Hag has also had to deal with a number of off-field issues, including the Mason Greenwood saga, domestic abuse allegations aimed at Antony and Jadon Sancho refusing to apologise for claiming he was being victimised by the Dutchman.

United take on Brentford at Old Trafford before the international break, which Ten Hag is likely to welcome in order to get some players back from injury.

Chicago Fire FC v New York Red Bulls

Manchester United and Chelsea are among the European giants keeping a close eye on teenage Major League Soccer sensation Julian Hall.

At just 15 years old, Hall made his first team debut for New York Red Bulls last week, becoming the second-youngester player to make an appearance in MLS history.

The winger has already developed a good reputation for his performances for New York Red Bulls and United States youth teams and will be hoping for more chances to shine in MLS after the brief cameo against Chicago Fire.

The Evening Standard report that Hall has already caught the eye of some of the biggest clubs in the world, with not only Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea interested in him, but also the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Chelsea have been aware of Hall’s talent for some time after the teenager scored against them in an Under-15s Generation adidas Cup in April this year, leading to the Blues scouting to him since.

The Stamford Bridge outfit have already made efforts to bring the youngster in on trial, but after Hall signed a contract with New York Red Bulls last month which runs until 2026, the American club can block any such move.

New York Red Bulls are keen to keep hold of their promising talent and a likely route to Europe for him could be through connected clubs RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig rather than straight to one of the powerhouses of the continent.

On Hall signing a contract with the club last month, Red Bulls head of sport Jochen Schneider said: ‘We are very excited to add Julian to our roster for this season and also the long-term.

‘Julian has had a very good season, not just at the academy level, but the MLS NEXT Pro level as well and he has demonstrated that he has the qualities to succeed in our system.’

Branthwaite has been a regular in Sean Dyche’s starting XI (Picture: Getty)

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is among the targets Manchester United are considering for the January transfer window.

United were in the marker for another centre-half in the summer transfer window but Harry Maguire’s decision to reject a £30million move to West Ham left them unable to bring in another option.

United have endured a disastrous start to the new season having lost four of their seven Premier League games, shipping 11 goals in that process.

Injuries have played their part with Raphael Varane returning to the side last week after another layoff with all three of their left-back options unavailable, along with right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

United will be without Lisandro Martinez for three months with the Argentina international undergoing a second surgery this year to address a foot injury he suffered in April.

United are monitoring a number of potential additions at the back including Nice star Jean-Clair Tobido and Antonio Silva of Benfica.

According to the Daily Mail, Everton starlet Branthwaite is another option on their radar.

The 21-year-old, who has started the Toffees’ last six games, spent last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven playing under United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, a regular in his starting XI.

The England Under-21 international is in talks with Everton over a new contract but that is unlikely to deter interest from Old Trafford.

Manchester City are also among the English clubs monitoring him.

Branthwaite has established himself as a key player in Sean Dyche’s starting XI but takeover plans and financial uncertainty at Goodison Park could complicate his long-term future.

‘He’s got a long-term deal at the moment, he’s settled, playing, going nicely,’ Dyche said of the defender last week.

‘He’s another young player. He went out for a season abroad last season and done well. He’s getting sharper, seeing the picture better but still not over-coaching for sure, he’s going along nicely and continues to grow as he is doing.’

Manchester United star Jadon Sancho has reportedly been in ‘regular contact’ with Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic amid rumours of a return.

Sancho left Dortmund for United in 2021 – with the Red Devils paying around £73m for him – but the Englishman has largely struggled at Old Trafford and looks set to depart in January amid a nasty fall-out with manager Erik ten Hag.

Dortmund are thought to be keen to bring Sancho back for a second spell and they are interested in a potential loan deal, despite some at the club raising concerns over his discipline from his first stint at the Bundesliga side.

New reports claim that Sancho and Terzic have held regular conversations and despite a return to Dortmund currently looking ‘unlikely’, it has not been ruled out, with Sancho believed to be keen to play regularly wherever he goes next.

Sancho is currently banned from all first-team facilities at United and has also attracted interest from Barcelona, who like Dortmund are considering a loan.

The 23-year-old’s future at United has been up in the air ever since boss Ten Hag came out and publicly slammed him over his poor application in training.

Sancho released a statement in response and accused the Dutchman of making him a ‘scapegoat’.

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

There is currently no sign of a resolution despite some of Sancho’s team-mates urging him to apologise to Ten Hag.

It is thought that the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) has offered to step in and help fix the issue.

United legend Roy Keane, meanwhile, has slammed Sancho for his behaviour but feels he can still rescue his career at Old Trafford.

Valencia have warned Manchester United that they have no interest in selling Javi Guerra despite the midfielder having a £86m release clause in his deal.

The Red Devils, along with fellow Premier League side Newcastle United, are considering a move for the the 20-year-old Spaniard, according to reports.

La Liga club Valencia are determined to do whatever they can to keep their academy gradate Guerra, who has made 19 first-team appearances to date.

Valencia’s sporting director Miguel Angel Corona has now sent a message to any club looking to sign Guerra in the January transfer window or next summer.

‘We are fully aware that we have a player with enormous potential for the future and the ability to perform at a good level now,’ he told the Daily Mail.

‘That is why the club have decisively moved him up to the first team in recent months. It is not in our plans to sell him to any club.

‘Our future plans involve continuing to give him the appropriate condition so that he is able to develop his full potential under [manager] Ruben Baraja, become an important player and continue to build a Valencia team of the immediate future around players like him.

‘For us, the emergence of Javi Guerra has not been a surprise.

‘We have been aware of what he is capable of for a long time, we have been helping him and demanding more from him every step of the way, from youth level to the elite.

‘He has to continue working in this way. We have to be cautious when making assessments about his level or how far he will be able to go, as he is a young player and has a long way ahead of him, but only he, with his day-to-day work, will determine where his limit is.’

Frank Lampard has hailed Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk and revealed that he tried to sign the Ukraine international while he was managing Everton.

Mudryk, who has struggled since he joined the Blues for £88.5m in January, registered his first goal for the club in Monday’s 2-0 win at rivals Fulham.

The 22-year-old worked under Lampard last season when the Chelsea legend stepped in to replace Graham Potter as head coach on a short-term deal.

Speaking on Sky Sports before Chelsea’s victory at Craven Cottage – in which Mudryk scored – Lampard lauded the 22-year-old as he provided insight into his work in training and also said he attempted to bring him to Everton in 2022.

‘His pace is a huge strength as well as his technical ability when he is dribbling and finishing,’ Lampard said about Mudryk.

‘I used to take training, he is a compulsive finisher, in a positive way. He would stay out after training to shoot. He is a very good finisher.

‘We haven’t seen much of that in the Premier League but you have to say this young boy has only just moved [into a new league].

‘I used to watch a lot of clips of him as Everton manager. We wanted to buy him at the time but it was probably never going to happen.

‘He moved on to Chelsea, and I have seen a lot of him. People are now aware of his pace and are trying to stop him from running at them.

‘We know the impact he can have. In the game against Liverpool, it was like, ‘Wow – what have we got here?’ – he’s lightning. He can outrun pretty much anyone in the league. His end product can be better but that’s typical for a young player.’
