They opened their 25th-anniversary reunion tour in Manchester and paid tribute to their late friend and bandmate Paul Cattermole.

This was the first time the pop band were back together since he died of natural causes aged 46 in April, and they took a moment to pay their respects.

As reported by the MailOnline, the band left the stage partway through the set as the lights dimmed and a video montage of their friend appeared on the screen, featuring footage of him performing with the group.

Through the show, each member of the group – who are also without former bandmate Hannah Spearritt for the tour after she decided against being part of the reunion after her ex’s death – took the time to offer their own tributes to Cattermole.

Rudolph Isley – the founding member of The Isley Brothers – has died aged 84.

The singer, who had hits For the Love of You, Twist and Shout, and This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak For You) with The Isley Brothers, reportedly died on Wednesday.

‘There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother,’ said Isley’s brother, Ronald Isley.

‘Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place,’ he added to the Rolling Stone in a statement.

TMZ shared that the cause of death is currently unconfirmed, but an insider told the publication that it is believed he had a heart attack.

The band, which is considered one of America’s best R&B and soul groups, began when Isley was just a teenager in 1954 after he originally began singing at church.

Isley founded the music group The Isley Brothers alongside his siblings -Ronald, O’Kelly, and Vernon. Vernon was tragically hit by a car while riding his bike and died aged 13.

In the late 1950s, the three brothers moved to New York from Ohio and they quickly started to see success.

Single Shout sold over one million copies, and It’s Your Thing, which was released by their own label T-Neck Records label, won a Grammy award.

In 1973, they welcomed three new members – younger brothers Ernie Isley who played lead guitar and drums and Marvin Isley, who was on bass guitar.

Isley married Elaine Jasper in 1958, and his brother-in-law Chris Jasper took on keyboard and synthesizers.

Ronald often took lead vocals, while O.Isley and R.Isley took backing vocals. R.Isley also recorded a few lead vocals and was a regular songwriter for the group.

The six-piece released best-selling albums including 3 + 3, Between the Sheets, and The Heat Is On, which reached number on the Billboard 200 chart.

Isley left the music industry in 1989 to become a Christian minister but reunited with the group over the years.

The Isley Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 for their achievements.

Isley and Elaine lived in New York before moving to Illinois’ Olympia Fields in 2013.

The only surviving Isley Brothers are now Ronald and Ernie.

Lenny Kravitz posted a steamy new teaser for his upcoming music video on Instagram and it’s safe to say the platform has been sent into meltdown.

The Fly Away hitmaker, 59, shared clips from the video from his single TK421 which will be released in the UK tomorrow at 5pm.

The sensual video sees the heartthrob gyrating on a golden chair and in a bathtub while stripping down and covering his modesty with cleverly placed statues.

Lenny shoots a smile to the camera as he parades in front of the camera in the buff before covering his manhood with his hands in another shot.

When he’s not dressed in tight brown leather trousers and statement sunglasses, fans catch a glimpse of his toned abs in the funky trailer.

He shared the post with his 4.4 million followers and the thirst is real in the comment section as fans clamour to share their adoration for the cheeky clip

Comedian and actor Luenell Campbell asked ‘How many times can I “Like” this?👅?’ while YouTube star Chris Klems said he had watched the teaser an ‘insane’ amount of times.

Willow Smith, the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, shared a shocked-face emoji to the post echoing the views of many.

Beauty influence Jennifer Polt Robinson jokingly asked why the video was ‘over two hours long’ as others claimed the video made them pregnant.

Lenny was branded a ‘king’ as the comment section was set on fire with flame emojis and heart-eye reactions.

‘Lord I’m going to hell for watching this 105 times lol,’ one user commented.

Another added: ‘Lenny out here snatching souls😮🔥🔥.’

Some users even hilariously claimed he was trying to kill them with the raunchy video, with others commenting they were already ‘dead.’

One joked: ‘Ok heart palpation is incurably irregular from this moment moving forward! 😫.’

It comes after Lenny delighted TikTok users after joining the platform and making a post with THAT iconic scarf.

He donned his famous woollen accessory that is more blanket than scarf in scope – genuinely, it’s well over 10 feet long – alongside a brown leather jacket, flared jeans, sunglasses (naturally) and boots.

Strolling casually towards the camera down a park path, with the scarf draped down one side of his body and thrown over his shoulder, the Let Love Rule crooner announced: ‘Grab your big scarf. It’s the first day of fall.’

The caption to his first-ever TikTok, which has already amassed 4.7million views in less than 48 hours, repeated his message, reading: ‘It’s the first day of fall.’

Sir Paul McCartney admits The Beatles loved Russians secretly playing their ‘forbidden’ music https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/06/paul-mccartney-beatles-loved-russians-secretly-playing-their-music-19615939/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/06/paul-mccartney-beatles-loved-russians-secretly-playing-their-music-19615939/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2023 09:06:32 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19615939

Sir Paul McCartney has opened up about how much he loved to hear stories about Russian people secretly importing their music to listen to it.

The Beatles legend, 81, was reflecting on the period between the 1960s and 1980s, when certain examples of Western music were banned in the Soviet Union.

On top of that, The Beatles were never invited to play behind the Iron Curtain at all, with Sir Paul only playing solo in Moscow for the first time in 2003.

Despite not being able to visit the country, Sir Paul said the band would still love to hear stories of Russian people having secret Beatles listening parties.

‘Everyone in Russia goes back to the Beatles period and remembers having to smuggle records, [or having] little rooms where you could play [songs],’ he said.

‘You didn’t want people to know. You didn’t want the authorities to know that you were listening to this forbidden group. We loved the idea of that.’

‘[We loved that] we were getting smuggled in along with Levi’s jeans. This was like true cultural arrival,’ he said, looking back at the band’s heyday.

Sir Paul made the comments while reflecting on Back In the U.S.S.R., a song that appeared on The Beatles’ ninth studio album in 1968, the White Album.

The Yesterday singer was speaking on the A Life In Lyrics podcast when he admitted to enjoying stories of Soviet citizens enjoying their music.

Asked whether he believed music could be dangerous and whether The Beatles were considered as such, the Eleanor Rigby songwriter said it was possible.

He explained: ‘To some people [music can be dangerous]. We always thought that we were on the right side [of history], if we were dangerous to the Russian authorities.

‘I think it was true that they were trying to suppress this Western influence. God knows what the politics and the realities are behind it.’

Earlier this month, Sir Paul admitted that sometimes his wife Nancy’s TV viewing choices before bed have been keeping him up at night.

He explained on his official website: ‘I get ready for bed and the last thing I do is read. Nancy will often look at a TV series at that time.

‘But I think it’s not conducive to sleep because some of the things she’ll watch are a little too exciting and the plot will keep you up all night.’

‘A mix-up over ice cream on Lorraine cost me my music career 20 years ago – but now I’m back’ https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/04/lorraine-mix-up-destroyed-alexis-strums-career-for-20-years-19596176/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/04/lorraine-mix-up-destroyed-alexis-strums-career-for-20-years-19596176/#respond Thu, 05 Oct 2023 08:47:00 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19596176
Alexis Strum
Alexis Strum’s career was left in turmoil after confusion on Lorraine

There are few people who can say a mistake over banana ice cream on Lorraine could end their career – but that’s exactly what Alexis Strum says happened to her.

The now 46-year-old was enjoying a blossoming career in the early noughties when her promotion for a new song went horribly wrong.

She had a spot on the popular TV show hosted by Lorraine Kelly, to promote upcoming single Addicted but in a blur her segment was axed, nobody would return her calls, and her label left her in the dust.

It turns out, Alexis’s song included a line that the Lorraine producers believed to be ‘a drug reference,’ as she explained in an exclusive chat with Metro.co.uk.

The lyric in question from her synth-filled pop heartbreak tune was ‘I’m a junkie, I’ve overdosed on Chunky Monkey.’

‘It’s a Ben and Jerry’s flavour – banana ice cream,’ Alexis explained, but apparently at the time nobody thought to ask her.

She was iced out and lost her chance at stardom as word spread about her pro-drug song, leading to her label Warner Music turning their backs on her.

At the time, losing prime spots on TV shows or radio plays could make or break an artist, especially one with only a handful of songs under her belt.

Her two ready-to-go albums were lost to time as doors shut in her face every way she turned, leaving her career dead in the water.

Seeing the hilarity in it now, Alexis laughed: ‘Banana ice cream basically ended my career.’

Two decades later, Alexis has released the song and whole album independently and is gearing up to release her second album Cocoon, thanks to her ‘determined’ fans.

‘I didn’t expect people to care but people really relate to the music,’ Alexis continued.

Fans were sharing her songs through ‘blackmarket’ trades of exclusive promotional EPs, which captured snippets of the lost albums.

She added: ‘They found tracks I was missing, someone even gave me Warner Music’s contact. Particularly my LGBTQ+ fans, they’ve been willing me along – there’d be no reason for this without them.’

Now as a single mother with plenty of perspective, Alexis admits she ‘wasn’t ready’ for superstardom the first time around.

The Addicted songstress has ‘lived many lives’ since her pop debut, having written for Kylie Minogue and Rachel Stevens as well as a successful back-up career in IT.

She’s become a TikTok star, known for her popular celebrity impersonations such as Jennifer Coolidge, Moira Rose, and Holly Willoughby but the album release is ‘closure’.

‘I was 20 and eager to please, I was desperate to be successful, now it’s only something fun,’ Alexis said. ‘It’s so nice to feel free and put myself first.

‘At 25 I was told I was too old to be a pop star and to be a writer instead. You can be both.’

She cites other artists like Claire Richards, Shania Twain and the inimitable Kylie for giving her courage to release the tracks now, despite being ‘too old’.

Listening back to these songs written during her teenage years, Alexis feels ‘fondly’ about her younger self – no embarrassment just a refreshing optimism.

She continued: ‘It’s a reminder of how the industry failed me and others, lots were dropped after being signed and it was painful.

‘But pop is coming back and Noughties artists are coming back, there’s something reassuring about the nostalgia. When times are hard it cheers you up.’

As for the ice cream incident, Lorraine Kelly did offer an apology to Alexis in March, claiming she ‘had no idea’ about the debacle.

Lorraine added: ‘Off to buy a jumbo sized tub of chunky monkey.’

Laughing, Alexis of course accepted the apology and as for her own love of the ice cream she’s a big fan and joked: ‘I still eat it!’

Alexis Strum’s long-awaited album is available from October 6 and she will perform an intimate London gig on November 3, tickets are available now.

Metro has contacted Warner Music for comment.

Muse’s Matt Bellamy smashes guitar and gifts it to lucky fan at jaw-dropping O2 Arena show https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/03/muse-at-the-o2-arena-london-five-jaw-dropping-moments-19595198/ https://metro.co.uk/2023/10/03/muse-at-the-o2-arena-london-five-jaw-dropping-moments-19595198/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2023 10:39:55 +0000 https://metro.co.uk/?p=19595198

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

Muse are renowned for putting on an incredible live show, but on Monday somehow blew even the highest expectations out of the water – for one lucky fan in particular.

Dominic Howard, Chris Wolstenholme and frontman Matt Bellamy closed out their Will Of The People Tour with a final show in London’s O2 Arena watched by around 20,000 overjoyed fans.

The English band shot to fame with their mix of classic hard rock and dreamy piano, futuristic synths and sincerely impressive vocals.

And everything that had made Muse a massive band with seven consecutive number one albums was on display on Monday, October 2.

While it’s hard to pick out the highlights from a show that was a genuine spectacle from start to finish, watching Matt smash up a guitar on stage before casually handing it to a fan was certainly a big one – for us, and especially for the front-row fanatic who is now the lucky owner of the ultimate souvenir.

You have to be in awe of the people who make barrier at a standing show, because you know they’ve likely queued for the entire day and probably longer, just to catch a slightly closer glimpse at their heroes.

Matt made sure one fan got a serious reward for their loyalty, as after smashing up a guitar on stage just a few songs into the set, he then casually walked to the front of the stage and passed it down to a lucky audience member.

How do you even recover from something like that?

And that’s not the only moment that made Muse at The O2 a night to remember…

The fire, confetti, streamers and snow

Muse
The trio made the stage their playground as they fought through streamers, confetti and fire all the way through the show (Picture: Getty Images for Muse)

Pretty much every concert has a confetti drop or two, usually reserved for the encore when fans’ frenzy is at its highest.

But Muse kept the frenzy going with multiple confetti drops throughout their powerful set, starting with giant streamers that made more than a few people jump just a few songs in.

Confetti was used to imitate a blizzard of powdered snow in one dream-like segment, while in another it exploded with joy.

And when there weren’t masses of paper falling from the sky, there were jets of fire coming from all over the stage in time to the songs, adding to the genuine sense of danger emanating through the Will of the People album.

The giant figure appearing as if from nowhere

Muse
The immersive nature of the show gave the event a dream-like quality (Picture: Getty Images for Muse)

Will of the People is a concept album which sees a fictional society rise up against their oppressors, all the while wearing shining angular masks.

At regular intervals, the stage would go dark and a new video would play on the screens, telling the story of this uprising. And the first time this happened, I – and likely 20,000 others – were so immersed in the video that when the lights came back on and an absolutely massive figurehead was suddenly on stage as if by magic – cried out in shock.

This giant masked figure, hand outstretched, was used brilliantly throughout – its head moved, reflecting light back off it, lights shone from its outstretched hand, and it just made the entire thing feel more ominous.

Satan himself closing out the show

Muse
The enormous articulated figures gav even more power to the set and the album’s message (Picture: Getty Images for Muse)

The oppressors in Will of the People rather unsubtly look like giant mechanical Satan, horns and all.

And just before the encore, when you thought – could there be a chance they’re actually finished? Do Muse do encores? – suddenly giant arms rose from each side of the stage, and the devil himself appeared in the background.

This absolutely enormous articulated figure was as frightening as it was impressive – particularly when fire began exploding out in time with the music.

It was a deranged and joyous Dante’s Inferno.

The crowd losing their collective minds at Supermassive Black Hole

Muse
Supermassive Black Hole lit the crowd alight (Picture: Getty Images for Muse)

Muse have a massive back catalogue of hits, plenty of which can drive a crowd wild, but Supermassive Black Hole has a stranglehold in a way other tracks don’t, and this was never more obvious than on Monday night.

From the very first recognisable note the audience went wild: the seated tickets stood, danced and didn’t sit until the lights came on at the end of the show in its entirety; those with standing tickets jumped like their lives depended on it; and no matter how loud and beautifully Matt sang, the noise of the crowd singing along to every word threatened to drown it out.

The show had an undercurrent of electricity all the way through, but Supermassive broke the damn and it was a lightning storm for the remainder of the set as Muse let loose banger after banger, returned by a joyous crowd – and a surprisingly hopping mosh pit.
