Matthew Wolfenden has played the cheeky David Metcalfe in Emmerdale for 17 years, but his time on the show is soon going to come an end as he has revealed that he only has two days of filming left.

Taking to Instagram, Matt shared the poster for his next project – Elf the Musical – and revealed that he will be swapping the Dales for the stage in a matter of days.

‘It’s all getting very real!’ He wrote beside the poster. ‘2 days left at Emmerdale – 4 days until we start rehearsals for this amazing show!’

Matthew is set to play Buddy the Elf in the newest revival of the musical, based on the 2003 film starring Will Ferrell.

However, his Emmerdale character will remain on screen for a few more weeks, and there will be plenty of drama to come before he departs.

Viewers have recently seen David’s son Jacob (Joe Warren-Plant) grow close to his ex, Victoria (Isabel Hodgins), with the pair very nearly sharing a kiss before being interrupted by David himself.

When Metro.co.uk caught up with Matt at the CUREUsher ball, he couldn’t give too much away regarding his exit, but he did tease that it would be related to the budding relationship between his son and ex.

‘That relationship with Jacob and Victoria is a huge reason why David eventually leaves the village,’ he told us.

‘There is going to be a few tears and a few fights, and that’s all I can say!’

He also made it clear that David doesn’t leave the village in a hearse, so there is still the possibility for him to return in the future.

‘What I can say is I’m not dying, which is a good thing! I don’t die, so maybe David will come back in a few years.’
